After searching for years for a mountain cabin site in the west, the author purchased 13 acres out of an old horse and cattle ranch dating back to 1881, just outside of what is now Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Gradually he became interested in the history of his land and uncovered a rich trove of Mescalero Apache, Spanish, Mexican and American cultures coming together, warring and ultimately co-existing in this little corner of the country. These disjointed notes are the results of his research and insight. Coronado, Kit Carson, Santana, Billy the Kid, the Bullards and Mosers, The Eddy Brothers, J. Robert Oppenheimer and, in turn, the Weinbergers all appear on or within a few miles of this special place. This is their story.
When the Constitution was written, some of the Founding Fathers wanted to include a provision that only those in Congress vote for president. Others felt it was important that the former colonists got to vote directly for their president. The Electoral College was the compromise reachedand its still how the president and vice president are elected today. This often-confusing topic is broken down step by step for readers. Simple, clear language and elaborating fact boxes target readers new to understanding the Electoral College system and those looking for a thorough but succinct review.

This book explores the importance of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in biomedical research. As SNP technologies have evolved from labor intensive, expensive, time-consuming processes to relatively inexpensive methods, SNP discovery has exploded. In terms of human biology, this research, particularly since the completion of the Human Genome Project, has provided a detailed understanding of evolutionary forces that have generated SNPs. It also has shown how SNPs shape human variation. The ability to inexpensively generate and analyze vast amounts of genetic data is poised to transform our understanding of human evolution and biology. “Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms” covers a broad...
This book exposes the myriad of victims of wrongful conviction by going beyond the innocent person who has been wrongfully incarcerated to include the numerous indirect victims who suffer collaterally. Careers in science, engineering, and medicine offer opportunities to advance knowledge, contribute to the well-being of communities, and support the security, prosperity, and health of the United States. But many women do not pursue or persist in these careers, or advance to leadership positions - not because they lack the talent or aspirations, but because they face barriers, including: implicit and explicit bias; sexual harassment; unequal access to funding and resources; pay inequity; higher teaching and advising loads; and fewer speaking invitations, among others. There are consequences from this underrepresentation of women for the nation as well: a labor shortage in many science, engin...
