Maurice Helfer (ca.1741-1824) moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to St. Charles Parish, Louisiana before 1770. He was probably married about 1768 to Maria Madelaine Haupman in St. Charles des Allemands Church in St. Charles Parish. He chiefly spelled his surname "Elfer," though the earliest church records of some of his children show Helffer or Helfre. The family later moved to Plattenville, Assumption Parish, Louisiana. Descendants and relatives lived in Louisiana, Georgia and elsewhere.

By the end of the twentieth century, the American West was home to nearly half of America’s immigrant population, including Asians and Armenians, Germans and Greeks, Mexicans, Italians, Swedes, Basques, and others. This book tells their rich and complex story—of adaptation and isolation, maintaining and mixing traditions, and an ongoing ebb and flow of movement, assimilation, and replenishment. These immigrants and ...

Introducing fresh archival evidence, author Lisa Banner here demonstrates how Francisco G? de Sandoval y Rojas, first Duke of Lerma, served as a vital link in Habsburg architectural patronage. She traces Lerma's trajectory as, beginning with the ancient royal city of Valladolid, he embarked on a career of renovating or building religious foundations in various towns and cities around seventeenth-century Spain. The unintended consequence of his architectural patronage and involvement was to proliferate the distinctive royal architectural style developed under Philip II, which connected the foundations of Lerma indelibly with the traditions of noble patronage in Habsburg Spain.
