Before Dawn
Before Dawn is a poetry collection written by Sapardi Djoko Damono: with contents written from 1961 to 2001, portraying the poet at different stages of life. Opened by "One Night" , written in 1964 when he was a young Moslem boy crying outside a church door as his classmates celebrated Christmas, the book ends with "Before Dawn" , written in 2001 when he was much older, pondering about frailty and mortality. Through his poems--the meaning, the sounds, the rhythm--Sapardi has proven himself capable of depicting the imaginative awareness of experience.
Di Serambi: On the Verandah
Di Serambi: On the Verandah, first published in 1995, brings together the work of twelve contemporary Indonesian poets. Over forty poems are presented in both Indonesian and English, together with notes on linguistic and cultural references, and a brief biography of each contributor. The poems have been selected to offer a range of chronological, thematic, and stylistic perspectives on Indonesian poetry. Iem Brown and Joan Davis travelled to Indonesia to interview the writers, providing the reader with a social context for the poetry. Elucidating Essay Poetry
Essay poetry is only one variation among many forms of poetry that already exist and which will exist in the future. I does not pretend or claim to be superior or inferior to other forms of poetry. It also does not purport to either dominate or homogenize poetry. It is just one rose from the exuberant garden of Eden, which is filled with many other types of flowers. May 1998 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Mass Protest toppled President Suharto's authoritarian regime. It was the beginning of the democratic transition in Indonesia, a country with the largest Muslim population in the world. Unfortunately, there were also racial riots against Chinese-Indonesian (Tionghoa) people in that critical time. Based on the history of Indonesia, Tionghoa people have often been the target of mass tantrums. During the riot, dozens of Chinese and Tionghoa women experienced sexual violence. In addition, there were ample reports of sexual violations and targeting the Chinese girls. It's the first essay poetry book telling discrimination issues in the largest Muslim country, Indonesia. All five fictional stories are based on true events: Ahmadiyah, homosexuality, a migrant worker who became the rape victim, religious differences, and the impact of the racial riots of May 1998. Essay poetry has become a stylistic choice that any writer with a similar viewpoint can emulate.
