The Disaster Film as Social Practice

Surveying disaster films from a Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective, this book explores the disaster film genre from its initial appearance in 1933 (The Grapes of Wrath, 1933) to its present-day form (Don’t Look Up!, 2021), laying bare the ideological unconscious at work within the genre. The Disaster Film as Social Practice examines environmental science, history, film and literature in its interdisciplinary analysis of the disaster film genre. It explores the interplay, and the dichotomy, of “restorative” and “reflective” disaster narratives. An analysis of cinema's role in symbolizing and managing collective anxiety around disaster and death narratives examines how disaster film...

This book analyzes the cinematic superhero as social practice. The study's critical context brings together psychoanalysis and restorative and reflective nostalgia as a way of understanding the ideological function of superhero fantasy. It explores the origins of cinematic superhero fantasy from antecedents in myth and religion, to twentieth-century comic book, to the cinematic breakthrough with Superman (1978). The authors then focus on Spider-Man as reflective response to Superman's restorative nostalgia, and read MCU's overarching narrative from Iron Man to End Game in terms of the concurrent social, political, and environmental conditions as a world in crisis. Zornado and Reilly take up ...

Oregon and Washington have been leaders in the craft beer boom that began in the 1980s. The number of craft breweries and brewpubs in the U.S. has increased dramatically in recent years--almost 4700 were doing business as of mid-2016. Much of this growth has taken place in the metropolitan areas of Portland and Seattle and in sizable cities like Eugene, Salem, Spokane and Tacoma. Yet many breweries have opened in villages and small towns. The author visits more than three dozen in this exploration of the vibrant craft brew scene along the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Profiles of brewers and owners and descriptions of breweries and their settings are provided, along with tasting notes on more than 200 beers.

More than Bombs and Bandages

More than Bombs and Bandages exposes the false assumption that military nurses only nursed. Based on author Kirsty Harris’ CEW Bean Prize-winning PhD thesis, this is a book that is far removed from the ‘devotion to duty’ stereotyping offering an intriguing and sometimes gut-wrenching insight into the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) during World War I. More than Bombs and Bandages provides rich pickings for all those interested in nursing history, women in the Australian military the application of medical treatments and World War I. What I enjoyed most about is Dr Kirsty Harris’s ability to reflect those nurses voices in a way that was so real – one could be there, the settings were so well understood from her research and the language kind of made a time warp in the reading. Very satisfying. As you know I have that Peter Rees book, but I could not get into it after reading the historical one. It was like comparing a great documentary to Facebook trivia!!! Trinity Knot

Trinity Knot. The most important things in the world come in threes. The debut novel from persistent daydreamer, Brittney Erin, explores the unconventional relationship between three lifelong friends. Taryn, the outcast and gifted artist; Aidan, the sexually-fluid game designer, and heir; and Liam, the rough-around-the-edges athlete with a chip on his shoulder. After their unlikely friendship blossomed into a downright taboo (but totally spicy) situation as they neared the end of high school, college promised the freedom they desperately desired. But fate had other plans, and their seemingly unbreakable bond was destroyed in an instant. Now, the former friends and lovers are brought back together after an unexpected accident. They are faced with the option to let each other go for good or examine their past and try to fix their broken relationship. Will the trinity knot bind them together forever or will they go their separate ways? Trinity Knot is a M/M/F bisexual romance that gets a little heavy on the spice. It also contains themes that may be upsetting to some readers, such as sexual assault, depression, self-harm, and bullying.
