"The Andes are a dry region. Water from melting glaciers, however, forms rivers and lakes that feed irrigation canals that have sustained communities for thousands of years. Managing and maintaining these water resources, then, is essential, and it is not surprising that the attendant responsibilities are grounded in religion. In 1921, in the village of San Pedro de Casta, Peru, when some folks were shirking their responsibilities (and claiming there was nothing written down to hold them accountable), local authorities detailed their duties in a Spanish-language document called the Entablo. This project consists of a critical introduction to the Entablo, a diplomatic transcription of the Spanish language manuscript, and an annotated English translation. The Entablo offers a wealth of insight into local rituals, religion, and community history, especially at an historical moment when these communities were changing rapidly. A Compilation of the Original Lists of Protestant Immigrants to South Carolina, 1763-1773

The 4,000 immigrants listed in this volume were Protestant refugees from Europe who came to South Carolina on the encouragement of an act passed by the General Assembly of the Colony on July 25, 1761, called the Bounty Act. Arranged chronologically, and taken verbatim from the original Council Journals, 1763-1773, the information given in the certificates and petitions for lands under the Bounty Act includes the date and the location and acres granted. In some cases the immigrants are listed with their age, country of origin, and name of the vessel on which they arrived. An excellent index provides references to more than 4,000 names in the text. This book is indispensable in attempting to locate an ancestor's place of settlement in South Carolina.
