This research-based book outlines career models for artists, methods of creative engagement, artistic options including individuality and branding, production practices, the realities of being a musician in the new industries, and implications for popular music education. Due to the profound effects of the digitisation of music, the music industries have undergone rapid transformation. The former record label dominated industry has been supplanted by new industries, including digital aggregators, strategists and online platforms. These new music industries now facilitate ‘direct’ access to both artists and their music. While such accessibility and the potential for artist exposure have never been greater, the challenge to stand out or to even navigate a musical career pathway is formidable. A useful resource for musicians and educators, this text highlights the ways in which the new music industries facilitate increased opportunities for 21st Century popular musicians to collaborate, communicate and interact with others interested in their music.

Fifteen-year-old Liv Morgan has moved with her mom from Buffalo to rural Kansas after her parents’ divorce in the late-1980s. Soon after she arrives, she meets Jack Lindt, who very quickly becomes her best friend and boyfriend. But the innocence and joy of young love is suddenly interrupted when a family tragedy pulls Jack’s life off course. Sunflower is a story about a romance that blossoms between two friends that is ultimately put to the test as Jack’s family deals with death, abuse, alcoholism, and deep family secrets. He loves Liv, but he often feels that she is better off without him. As his depression and angst consume him, he gains strength from reliving the memories of their early days together, and revelling in their surprise encounters with each other. Emily Morra has crafted a novel filled with suspense, friendship, teen romances, and family drama. Readers will cheer on the Lindt brothers as they attempt to run the farm, and will wait with intense anticipation along with Jack in his newly-planted sunflower field. Will Liv return to him? Will the mystery of Mr. White and the Lindt family be solved? There is much to be uncovered within the pages of Sunflower.

Down On My Knees

Will I be the one down on my knees, or will she? Camryn’s nerd-girl tendencies have served her well academically. It has always been her personal life that had her barely able to tread water. Years of abuse and ridicule from the one person that should have loved her best has made Camryn hide away from the rest of the world, content to stay in the background. When her long-term relationship ends, she’s ready to be done with love altogether. It’s not worth the hurt. Not to her. A rock star. A man-whore. A guy nobody expects to settle down. Isaac has known Camryn for years, but he’s never seen as her anything but a friend. Until now. Camryn is everything he wants in life and exactly what he needs. He just needs to convince her how good they’d be together. But both Camryn and Isaac have secrets, and when they’re revealed, it could ruin everything before it even begins.

Aussie Fans

Australia holds a unique place in the global scheme of fandom. Much of the media consumed by Australian audiences originates from either the United States or the United Kingdom, yet several Australian productions have also attracted international fans in their own right. This first-ever academic study of Australian fandom explores the national popular culture scene through themes of localization and globalization. The essays within reveal how Australian audiences often seek authentic imports and eagerly embrace different cultures, examining both Hollywood’s influence on Australian fandom and Australian fan reactions to non-Western content. By shining a spotlight on Australian fandom, this book not only provides an important case study for fan studies scholars, it also helps add nuance to a field whose current literature is predominantly U.S. and U.K. focused. The contributions to this volume aim to stimulate discussion about the role of assessment in the learning experiences of students in music and other creative and performing arts settings. The articles offer insights on how assessment can be employed in the learning setting to enhance outcomes for students both during their studies at higher education institutions and after graduation. An international group of leading researchers offers an exciting array of papers that focus on the practice of assessment in music, particularly in higher education settings. Contributions reflect on self-, peer- and alternative assessment practices in this environment. There is a particular emphasis on the alignment between assessment, curriculum structure and pedagogy.

Asperger Syndrome - A Love Story

Open, honest and upbeat, this book gives personal insight into both the ups and downs of an Asperger relationship. Seeking to challenge the bad press that people with Asperger Syndrome (AS) get as partners, Sarah and Keith tell their story of how they are making it work - and also how they got it wrong - with disarming frankness and humour. When Sarah and Keith met in 2003 neither knew much about Asperger Syndrome. Sarah thought Keith was `weird' and couldn't work out why; and Keith thought Sarah was obsessed with diagnosing him with something-or-other. Difficulties ensued that brought the relationship to an end. Slowly, however, they each built up their knowledge of AS and in the meantime developed a mutual understanding, mutual acceptance and a desire to be together again. This personal account is supplemented with professional knowledge and anecdotes gained from Sarah's work with adults with AS - a career which started as a result of her experiences with Keith. She swears that she didn't take her work home with her! It is inspiring reading for couples in Asperger relationships as well as for counselling professionals.
