The Leper King

King of Jerusalem and Defender of the Holy Sepulcher, Baldwin IV walks the sword's edge between the intriguing barons of his own Court and the jihad of Islam. Baldwin is young, innocent, and a military strategist of no small measure. And, he is a leper. In the midst of mounting political tensions and war, a mysterious woman unexpectedly befriends the lonely sick king--a woman who claims she is Mary Magdalen.

Public Health Significance of Urban Pests

The second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century witnessed important changes in ecology, climate and human behaviour that favoured the development of urban pests. Most alarmingly, urban planners now face the dramatic expansion of urban sprawl, in which city suburbs are growing into the natural habitats of ticks, rodents and other pests. Also, many city managers now erroneously assume that pest-borne diseases are relics of the past. All these changes make timely a new analysis of the direct and indirect effects of present-day urban pests on health. Such an analysis should lead to the development of strategies to manage them and reduce the risk of exposure. To this end, WHO invited international experts in various fields - pests, pest-related diseases and pest management - to provide evidence on which to base policies. These experts identified the public health risk posed by various pests and appropriate measures to prevent and control them. This book presents their conclusions and formulates policy options for all levels of decision-making to manage pests and pest-related diseases in the future. [Ed.]

The Gambit Queen

The Leper's last heir; a kingdom all but lost... With the loss of Jherusalem three years before, only Tyre under Conrad de Montferrat remains to stand against the tide of Islam. Even though the dispossessed king lays siege to Muslim held Acre, calls begin to spread for new leadership centered around the young princess, Isabella d'Anjou, the Leper King's last heir, whom they wish to force into a new marriage against her will. But things are never as they seem, especially in the Kingdom of Jherusalem. As the master of Sion sets his long-awaited plans into motion, Isabella must rely on a small group of allies-her husband Humphrey, and their friend Ernoul, along with the Magdalen and her daughter Salome-to fight the hidden enemies of the embattled kingdom, even as the knights of a new crusade march to war against Salehdin under Richard the Lionheart and his nephew Henri de Champagne. But what sacrifices must Isabella make for the sake of the kingdom-and can they trust the secretive Salome to help defeat the sinister Order of Sion at last before the kingdom ends up under its control... or will she betray them all to Amalric de Lusignan?

Eager for any writing job, Rena accepts a position interviewing former slaves for the Federal Writers' Project. There, she meets Frankie Washington, a 101-year-old woman whose honest yet tragic past captivates Rena. As Frankie recounts her life as a slave, Rena is horrified to learn of all the older woman has endured--especially because Rena's ancestors owned slaves. While Frankie's story challenges Rena's preconceptions about slavery, it also connects the two women whose lives are otherwise separated by age, race, and circumstances. But will this bond of respect, admiration, and friendship be broken by a revelation neither woman sees coming?

Model Neural Networks and Behavior

The most conspicuous function of the nervous system is to control animal behav ior. From the complex operations of learning and mentation to the molecular con figuration of ionic channels, the nervous system serves as the interface between an animal and its environment. To study and understand the fundamental mecha nisms underlying the control of behavior, it is often both necessary and desirable to employ biological systems with characteristics especially suitable for answering specific questions. In neurobiology, many invertebrates have become established as model systems for investigations at both the systems and the cellular level. Large, readily identifiable neurons have made invertebrates especially useful for cellular studies. The fact that these neurons occur in much smaller numbers than those in higher animals also makes them important for circuit analysis. Although important differences exist, some of the questions that would be tech nically impossible to answer with vertebrates can become experimentally tractable with invertebrates.
