Joseph Rhea (1715-1777) was born in Loughborne Parish, Donegal Co., Ireland. He married 1752 in Ireland, Elizabeth McIlwaine (1732-1793), the daughter of John McIlwaine and Margaret Scott. She died in Bluff City, Sullivan Co., Tenn. He died in Virginia. Joseph Rhea came to America in 1769 with his wife and children. He was a pastor in Fahan, Donegal, Ireland before coming to Pennsylvania. In 1771 he accepted a call to Piney Creek Church, which is west of Taneytown, Maryland. He had eight children, seven born in Ireland and one in Maryland. Descendants live in Tennessee, Virginia, Arkansas, Texas, California and elsewhere.
