This study investigates the ethical aspects of deploying and researching into so-called climate engineering methods, i.e. large-scale technical interventions in the climate system with the objective of offsetting anthropogenic climate change. The moral reasons in favour of and against R & D into and deployment of CE methods are analysed by means of argument maps. These argument maps provide an overview of the CE controversy and help to structure the complex debate.

Argumentation mining is an application of natural language processing (NLP) that emerged a few years ago and has recently enjoyed considerable popularity, as demonstrated by a series of international workshops and by a rising number of publications at the major conferences and journals of the field. Hannes Fernow führt interdisziplinär in das Thema Climate Engineering ein. Er integriert im Rahmen einer Politischen Hermeneutik wissenschaftstheoretische, technikphilosophische und umweltethische Argumente in historisch tradierte Risiko- und Naturverständnisse und zeigt, dass die Folgen von technologischen Klimaveränderungen nicht verlässlich vorhersagbar sind. Denn das Klima ist aufgrund fehlender Erfahrungen und systemischer Komplexität computertechnisch nur unzulänglich repräsentierbar. Vor diesem Hintergrund plädiert der Autor dafür, die Entscheidungsfindung zur Zukunft des Klimas nicht dem konventionellen Risikomanagement allein zu überlassen, sondern den Common Sense als Ressource für einen gelingenden Umgang mit der klimatischen Herausforderung zu entdecken. Zu dessen Grundüberzeugungen zählen das schrittweise Vorgehen und die Heuristik der Fehlertoleranz.
Is critical argumentation an effective way to overcome disagreement? And does the exchange of arguments bring opponents in a controversy closer to the truth? In Großbritannien und Deutschland hat dies zu kontroversen öffentlichen Debatten zwischen Gegnern und Befürwortern der vorgeschlagenen Technologien geführt. Stephanie Uther zeigt anhand einer argumentativen Analyse der Diskursebenen Medien, Politik und Wissenschaft, welche Rechtfertigungs- und Legitimationsangebote von Akteuren vorgebracht werden und wie diese in konkreten forschungspolitischen Maßnahmen „handlungswirksam“ geworden sind. Technologies shape who we are, how we organize our societies and how we relate to nature. For example, social media challenges democracy; artificial intelligence raises the question of what is unique to humans; and the possibility to create artificial wombs may affect notions of motherhood and birth. Some have suggested that we address global warming by engineering the climate, but how does this impact our responsibility to future generations and our relation to nature? This book shows how technologies can be socially and conceptually disruptive and investigates how to come to terms with this disruptive potential. Four technologies are studied: social media, social robots, climate engineering and artificial wombs. The authors highlight the disruptive potential of these technologies, and the new questions this raises. The book also discusses responses to conceptual disruption, like conceptual engineering, the deliberate revision of concepts.
