The idea of the frontier--once, the geographical borderline moving further and further West across the North American continent--has shaped American science fiction television since its beginnings. TV series have long adapted the frontier myth to outer space and have explored American Wests of the future. This book takes a deeper look at the futuristic frontiers within such series as Star Trek, Firefly, Terra Nova, Defiance and The 100, revealing how they rethink colonialism, the environment, spaces of risk and utopian/dystopian worlds. Harnessing forms of speculation and the post-apocalyptic imagination, these series engage with matters of the present, from the legacies of colonialism to climate change and the increasing integration of humans and technologies. In doing so, these series question in novel ways the very idea of borders and reshape cultural binaries such as Self/Other, wilderness/civilization, city/nature, human/non-human and utopia/dystopia.

In diesem Buch wird untersucht, woher wir wissen können, was metaphysisch möglich und notwendig ist - über begriffliche Notwendigkeiten und Tatsachen hinaus. Der Autor diskutiert die zentralen Vorschläge, die seit dem Erscheinen von Saul Kripkes Naming and Necessity von David Chalmers, Timothy Williamson und anderen Autoren vorgebracht wurden und unterzieht sowohl empiristische als auch rationalistische Ansätze einer umfassenden Kritik. Hierbei wird gezeigt, dass nur ein moderat antirealistisches Verständnis von metaphysischer Modalität, welches diese als vollständig durch begriffliche Modalität und empirische Tatsachen konstituiert betrachtet, diese epistemisch zugänglich macht. Dies reduziert die philosophische Relevanz von Einsichten darein, was metaphysisch möglich und notwendig ist, jedoch dramatisch. Der Autor stellt außerdem die schwerwiegenden Konsequenzen für Fragen der philosophischen Methodologie dar und diskutiert die modalen Argumente gegen den Materialismus in der Philosophie des Geistes.
The Exchange Rate Insulation Puzzle
The notion that flexible exchange rates insulate a country from foreign shocks is well grounded in theory, from the classics (Meade, 1951; Friedman 1953), to the more recent open economy literature (Obstfeld and Rogoff, 2000). We confront it with new evidence from Europe. Specifically, we study how shocks that originate in the euro area spill over to its neighboring countries. We exploit the variation of the exchange rate regime across time and countries to assess whether the regime alters the spillovers: it does not -- flexible exchange rates fail to provide insulation against euro area shocks. This result is robust across a number of specifications and holds up once we control for global financial conditions. We show that the workhorse open-economy model can account for the lack of insulation under a float, assuming that central banks respond to headline consumer price inflation. However, it remains puzzling that policy makers are ready to forego stabilization of economic activity to the extent we found in the data.

KaziKidz Teaching Material for Foundation Phase, Grades 1-3: A short version of the teaching resources for Life Skills Teachers. Being physically active contributes to the development of physical competence and fitness as well as to the child’s cognitive, social and emotional development. Physical Education (PE) plays a crucial role in the holistic education and development of children. Yet, in many schools from marginalised neighbourhoods, PE is not given the recognition and importance it deserves. For this reason, the KaziKidz teaching material was developed for teachers, principals, school staff or for those responsible from the Department of Education, in order to contribute to and support the quality of PE in these schools. The exercises and games in this book are easy to use, do not require a lot of material and are met with much joy and enthusiasm by the learners. The teaching material was developed by a team of South African and Swiss experts. The lessons meet the requirements of the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and are supported by the Department of Education, Eastern Cape.
