When publishing the English-Russian translation of the manuscript by Sebeos, we adhered to the same principles that guided us in translating “History of Armenia” by Movses Khorenatsi. We considered it our duty to convey the most accurate meaning of the original, retain its expressions, and present our readers with a translation that, if possible, would replace the original for them. About Sebeos himself, we have the most insufficient information. Chamchyan (II. 345) and O. Shakhatuni (Description. The Reign of Heraclius (610-641)
This volume includes the thirteen papers which were presented during the workshop The Reign of Heraclius: Crisis and Confrontation, which took place from 19 to 21 April 2001 at the University of Groningen. The long reign of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius (610-641) saw drastic political changes: the conquest of the eastern provinces of the empire by the Persians (603-620), Heraclius' counter-offensive and recovery of these territories (622-628), and the definitive loss of almost the whole Byzantine east in the 630s and early 640s to the Muslim Arabs. Did these historical events cause significant changes in the administrative, political, military and ecclesiastical structures and institutions of the empire? And if so, how did they affect imperial ideology and propaganda and the range of ideas concerning the empire and the emperor which circulated in the different religious communities? In the contributions presented in this book these and other questions are discussed by outstanding scholars of Byzantine history and culture, Eastern Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
The Armenian History Attributed to Sebeos
The History attributed to Sebeos is one of the major works of early Armenian historiography. Although anonymous, it was written in the middle of the seventh century, a time when comparable chronicles in Greek and Syriac are sparse. Sebeos traces the fortunes of Armenia in the sixth and seventh centuries within the broader framework of the Byzantine-Sasanian conflict. This book will be of interest to all those involved in the study of Armenia, the Caucasus, the Eastern Roman Empire and the Middle East in late antiquity. It will be of particular value to Islamicists, since Sebeos not only sets the scene for the coming of Islam, but provides the only substantial non-Muslim account of the initial period of expansion.

The Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire 2 Part Set: Volume 3, AD 527-641
This is the final volume of the three-volume Prosopography which now provides a complete secular biographical dictionary for the Later Roman Empire from AD 260 to 641. This volume begins at the start of the reign of Justinian in 527 and ends at the death of Heraclius in 641. Like its predecessors, this volume has collected the surviving evidence about the personnel of the empire, about members of the senates of Rome and Constantinople and their families, about members of senatorial families still surviving and holding public office in the western lands (Gaul and Spain) no longer under Roman rule. It includes officials serving at the imperial court and in the civil and provincial administration, as well as army personnel at least of the rank of tribune and above. It also includes all persons, male and female, of the status of perfectissimus and above, whether holding office or not, and persons of learning, such as lawyers, doctors, teachers and writers. The project is intended as a tool for research works in the whole field of late empire studies.
The Legend of Mar Qardagh
