"The application of Bakhtin's critical theories to Gil Vicente has helped in understanding the genre and plot-compositional traits and sources of Vicente's drama. Until now, these have been virtually ignored by Vicentine scholars, most of whom have limited themselves to biographical/historical approaches in an effort to explain the playlets as products of a particular epoch - the Middle Ages and/or the Renaissance - and the corresponding literary modes. This book is a photographic journey of fifty years of research on Brazil and its folk-popular poetry, the "literatura de cordel." The photos taken by the author over these fifty years are divided into three parts: 1. The poets and the printers of "cordel" 2.The intellectuals, informants and friends associated with the research and 3. The fairs, markets and scenes of folklore related to the research. Each photo, when applicable, is followed by a description of the scene or person. This archive includes many persons and scenes that are no longer present in Brazil thus documenting the reality of those times. The book is a companion book to the complete story of the story-poems and their authors seen in his recent "Portrait of Brazil in the Twentieth Century - the Universe of the 'Literatura de Cordel'".
The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature is by far the most comprehensive work of its kind ever written. Its three volumes cover the whole sweep of Latin American literature (including Brazilian) from pre-Colombian times to the present, and contain chapters on Latin American writing in the USA. Volume 3 is devoted partly to the history of Brazilian literature, from the earliest writing through the colonial period and the Portuguese-language traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and partly also to an extensive bibliographical section in which annotated reading lists relating to the chapters in all three volumes of The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature are presented. These bibliographies are a unique feature of the History, further enhancing its immense value as a reference work.
This volume presents a survey of the reception of Greek myths - including Antigone, Medea, the Trojan cycle, and Alcestis - in Brazilian literature and stage performance. The collection addresses the work of many innovative authors, some of them great names of Brazilian literature, such as Jorge Andrade and Nelson Rodrigues, who are influential in this specific area of classical reception and well known by modern audiences. Os românticos retrataram Gregório de Matos como um escritor ébrio, boêmio e obsceno. Afastando-se desses clichês, Hansen analisou a obra do poeta barroco em confronto com a retórica do período, com suas regras específicas de obscenidade e maledicência. O autor, professor da USP, apresenta também um rico painel cultural e político da Bahia oitocentista. The principal article in this issue examines in detail a group of heraldic manuscripts: an armorial of the Knights of the Round Table, with a number of their arms reproduced in full colour, the treatise on Arthurian tournaments by Jacques d'Armagnac, and the treatise on blazon by Clément Prinsault. A scholarly edition of the two treatises is provided, and the texts are discussed in an introductory section emphasising the importance of Arthurian heraldry. The arms of 150 knights are painted in the manuscripts and blazoned, and 59 of them are reproduced in 10 pages of full-colour plates. Other articles address the underlying theme of the Conte de Graal, in which Alexander is seen as representing the negative aspects of charity; Robert de Boron's endeavours to produce a coherent Arthuriad; and correspondences between the Arthurian tellings of two Old French authors, Manessier and Gerbert de Montreuil.
