Radio signals keep making material, informational, political, and social connections in this world. Exploring these signals architectonically, the contributors engage with the situatedness of radio signal recordings in nature and with knowledge implied in radio communication. Rooted in experimental design and data feminism, the book presents innovative tools for navigating data by spanning media theory, information studies, and feminist new materialism. This offers an intersectional and post-disciplinary approach to computation, classification, and search that is accessible to artists, technologists, and researchers - facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and deepening the understanding of information technologies.
Artistic strategies have a great transformative potential to improving research, teaching, and artistic expression. The contributors to this volume show how to unleash this potential by presenting a variety of epistemological experiments at the intersection of artistic research, pedagogy, and innovative practices in art and design education. The diversity of contributions demonstrates the non-exhaustive space for experimental phenomenological adventures. This collection strengthens new communities of educators and researchers in arts and design, whose practices are built on the concept of care as empathetic knowledge production.
In this book, the editors focus on architecture and communication from various different perspectives – taking into account that the term “architecture” is used for buildings as well as in the context of computer software. Data and software also impact on our cities; raw data, however, do not convey any information – in order to generate information and communication they have to be organized and must make sense to the reader. The contributions avoid clear separation of the various communication spheres of their disciplines. Instead, they use the wide range of approaches to explore meanings – an ambitious aim that leaves the destination wide open; the reader is invited to share in this adventure.

Indeed, vermin imagery has often been used to denigrate poor, foreign, or racialized people. Yet many writers have reclaimed vermin, giving new meaning to creeping rodents, swarming insects, and wriggling worms. Convivia is a journal that is interested in thinking what architectonics is or could be in the twenty-first century. Pre-specific to architecture, architectonics deals with the real in an abstract, yet edifying manner. Under architectonics, the indeterminacy brought by contemporary science is assumed as a liberation from ontological and epistemological principles, and welcomed as a fortunate occasion to understand and embrace the stating of any principle as an ‘art’ in itself—autonomous, yet not automatic or autarkic. Architectonic deals with the real in terms of a communicational physics, through articulations that are concrete yet reasoned in abstractive and projective manners. The journal aims to set the table for a series of banquets—of convivia—in which courses do not respond to mere needs or inconsequential delights of ‘consumption’. We focus on architectonic alloys of necessities and contingencies: necessities are bounded by contingencies, and contingencies are engendered through ‘figuring out’ what is necessary.
