Finite volume methods are used in numerous applications and by a broad multidisciplinary scientific community. The book communicates this important tool to students, researchers in training and academics involved in the training of students in different science and technology fields. The selection of content is based on the author’s experience giving PhD and master courses in different universities. In the book the introduction of new concepts and numerical methods go together with simple exercises, examples and applications that contribute to reinforce them. In addition, some of them involve the execution of MATLAB codes. The author promotes an understanding of common terminology with a balance between mathematical rigor and physical intuition that characterizes the origin of the methods. This book aims to be a first contact with finite volume methods. This book is a liber amicorum to Professor Sergei Konstantinovich Godunov and gathers contributions by renowned scientists in honor of his 90th birthday. The contributions address those fields that Professor Godunov is most famous for: differential and difference equations, partial differential equations, equations of mathematical physics, mathematical modeling, difference schemes, advanced computational methods for hyperbolic equations, computational methods for linear algebra, and mathematical problems in continuum mechanics.
This book presents the theory of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients. The exposition is based on ideas developing the Gelfand-Shilov theorem on the polynomial representation of a matrix exponential. Boundary value problems for ordinary equations, Green matrices, Green functions, the Lopatinskii condition, and Lyapunov stability are considered. This volume can be used for practical study of ordinary differential equations using computers. In particular, algorithms and computational procedures, including the orthogonal sweep method, are described. The book also deals with stationary optimal control systems described by systems of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients. The notions of controllability, observability, and stabilizability are analyzed, and some questions on the matrix Lure-Riccati equations are studied.
This fascinating book, penned by Luc Tartar of America’s Carnegie Mellon University, starts from the premise that equations of state are not always effective in continuum mechanics. Tartar relies on H-measures, a tool created for homogenization, to explain some of the weaknesses in the theory. These include looking at the subject from the point of view of quantum mechanics. Here, there are no "particles", so the Boltzmann equation and the second principle, can’t apply.
