Ecosystem Services
The ecosystem services (ES) framework opens the door to common ground between ecology science and economics in facing the challenge of planetary sustainability. Application of the available methodologies and instruments reveals both the high potential and the controversies related to this new socio-ecological management approach. Feeding on the research, reviews and testimonies presented at the XV International Summer School on Environment (ISSE) of the University of Girona (2015), this proceedings book displays the main concepts related the ES approach and outcomes from case studies dealing with its operationalization. However, the ultimate goal of this crosswalk language remains; changing mentalities and raising awareness to the point of installing new socio-ecological values, leading society to economic models in which ES conservation is understood as subsistence premise and therefore an intrinsic component of profits.\n \n
Urban Dynamics in the Post-pandemic Period
This book offers a unique perspective on urban processes affecting tourist spaces and city centres. Economic, social and environmental uncertainty has been commonplace since March 2019, when mobility slowed down across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated trends that have been investigated in urban space for years. The incorporation of technologies, the expansion of tourism and the introduction of policies that in part want to advance sustainability are generating processes of reorganisation of territories that are driving changes. Nordic urban nature recreation
The Nordic countries continue to experience growth of urban areas, which provides benefits like economic growth, but also imposes economic costs in terms of reduced ecosystem services. This report focuses on urban nature recreation and highlights economic methods and data that can help capture the associated nonmarket welfare benefits. The study stresses the need to collect user data to better understand visitation patterns, which can be combined with valuation methods to provide evidence of economic benefits associated with e.g., hiking, cycling, skiing, paddling and other recreation activities. Once these benefits are visible, decision-makers will have a better basis to balance economic growth with the environmental costs it imposes on urban ecosystem services.

Capacitat de càrrega i gestió adaptativa per a la preservació dels ecosistemes marins i costaners
Investigadors i tècnics especialitzats presenten els conceptes de capacitat de càrrega de l’ecosistema, enfocament ecosistèmic, gestió adaptativa, cogovernança, i defineixen les directrius per a una protecció harmonitzada i efectiva, i uns usos sostenibles dels ecosistemes marins costaners. La Taula de Cogestió Marítima del Litoral del Baix Empordà promou que en el seu entorn marítim i costaner de ric patrimoni natural, sòcio-econòmicament molt dinàmic, i també molt sensible a causa del canvi climàtic, s’apliquin estratègies de gestió adaptativa, consensuades per tots els agents implicats, tot ajustant les activitats i les pressions sobre els ecosistemes amb la finalitat de preservar el bon estat ecològic dels hàbitats i les espècies.
Antropología pública de la conservación
Desde el ámbito de la antropología de la conservación, se analizan los procesos de declaración, desarrollo y gestión de las áreas protegidas y, en concreto, mediante una selección de casos de estudio, los de los parques naturales. Con una mirada crítica, holística y comparativa, se examinan las políticas conservacionistas orientadas a la planificación, reordenación y participación en espacios socioecosistémicos con dinámicas socioculturales complejas. Los distintos capítulos se articulan transversalmente en torno a la reivindicación de la antropología pública de la conservación y comparten un objetivo central: reflexionar sobre las áreas protegidas con una voluntad transformadora y diseñar la implementación de acciones efectivas para su conservación.
