This book presents a new method for solving geomechanical problems – one that explicitly takes into account deformation and fractures of soils, which create important effects, but are neglected in classical approaches. The method reveals the influence of the form of a structure on its ultimate state. The entire approach takes into account five types of physical as well as geometrical non-linearity, and highlights the simplicity of some non-linear computations against the consequently linear ones.

Piling is a fast-moving field and in recent years there have been major advances in theory, methods, testing procedures and equipment. Some of these changes have been driven by the need for economies by improved efficiency, reduced spoil production and new methods of pile bore support. Advances in theoretical analyses allow pile design to be refined so that piles and pile groups perform to better advantage.
The present book deals with canonical factorization of matrix and operator functions that appear in state space form or that can be transformed into such a form. A unified geometric approach is used. The main results are all expressed explicitly in terms of matrices or operators, which are parameters of the state space representation. The applications concern different classes of convolution equations. A large part the book deals with rational matrix functions only.
