In addition to material translated from German it contains a unique series of vernacular sermons on the a ~Song of Songsa (TM), which reveal unsuspected connections with the mystic authors Beatrijs van Nazareth and Hadewijch.

War Sermons

This collection of essays ponders upon the intricate relations between the military and the spiritual from the Middle Ages to the present day. In order to analyse human attitudes towards conflicts, it is necessary to dwell upon the nebulous area where the religious and political spheres interweave so tightly that they become virtually impossible to distinguish. Indeed, despite remaining the responsibility of the state, the political decision to go to war depends heavily on some spiritual underpinning since, without a moral, ethical, or religious justification, it stands for gratuitous violence and is often equated with aggression. Situated as they are at the intersection of religious and pol...

Preparing for Death, Remembering the Dead

Death and dying were not in the main focus of the denominational conflicts of the 16th century. However, pious literature covered these topics again and again, not only before the Reformation, but after it as well. Here, certain denominational differences are clearly visible. Partly, these differences consist in the use of genres: For example, funeral sermons are an often used genre among Lutherans, while they are much rarer in the Reformed tradition. Similar differences can be observed concerning epitaphs. In Roman Catholic areas, funeral sermons and epitaphs are common in the 16th century, too; but their religious function is often a different from the one in Lutheranism. Beyond such inter...

António Vieira's Sermon Against the Dutch Arms (1640)

This is the first critical edition of Antonio Vieira's Sermon against the Dutch (1640), one of his best and most famous pieces of writing. The discovery of nine new (apograph) manuscripts and the inclusion of early Spanish translations (which are related to the previously unpublished manuscripts) as well as of old and new Portuguese editions shed a new light on the history of his sermons and point the way to a different philological approach to the work of the renowned Jesuit. The editor's introduction and commentary provide fresh insights into the language employed by Vieira and his use and interpretation of classical, historical, theological and literary sources. This edition is completed by a critical bibliography. It summarizes and adds to all previous philological research into Vieira's sermons and other work."
