The consequences of diseases involving the immune system now appear to have much wider impact on health care and management. Even though over the last decade, our understanding of the basic immunological mechanisms underlying various diseases has increased considerably, the application of these research findings for drug development have not been fully exploited. With a view to analyzing the current strategies for immunotherapy, Immunopharmacology: Strategies for Immunotherapy brings together contributions from experts involved with various aspects of immunology. It explores new approaches for prevention and treatment of diseases, and these approaches invariably involve the manipulation of t...

Neem

Neem is a fascinating tree. On the one hand, it seems to be one of the most promising of all plants and may eventually benefit every person on the planet. Probably no other yields as many strange and varied products or has as many exploitable by-products. Indeed, as foreseen by some scientists, this plant may usher in a new era in pest control, provide millions with inexpensive medicines, cut down the rate of human population growth, and perhaps even reduce erosion, deforestation, and the excessive temperature of an overheated globe. On the other hand, that all remains only a vague promise. Although the enthusiasm may be justified, it is largely founded on empirical or anecdotal evidence. Our purpose here is to marshal the various facts about this little-known species, to help illuminate its future promise, and to speed realization of its potential. This report has been produced by the National Research Council particularly for nonspecialists such as government ministers, research directors, university students, private voluntary organizations, and entrepreneurs. It is intended as an economic development document, not a scientific monograph.

Contraception Research for Today and the Nineties

The twentieth century will close with 5 billion people added to the current global population. Between 1980 and the year 2000, the total world population will increase from 4 billion 10 a liUle over 6 billion. There will be half as many morc people on earth during these 20 years than the number accumulated since the origin of man to 1980. Overpopulation is particularly acute in economically developing countries, where contraception has become a social necessity. Comraceplion Researcll for Today and Ihe Nineties carries the proceedings of an international symposium convened in New Delhi in October, 1986, to review the status of current research in contraception. Major organizations supporting...

Taking a science-based look at an emerging area of medicine, Adaptive Biology and Medicine: New Frontiers, Volume 3 discusses the biology of adaptation at the molecular, cellular, and system levels in response to a variety of stressful conditions. Leading international experts present a total of 37 chapters that cover a common continuum of adaptations. For easy reading, the information has been grouped under the sub-headings: Cardiovasular Adaptation, Adaptations to Changes in Altitude and Microgravity, and Environmental Stresses. Examples of cross adaptations are included where repeated exposure to one stimulus may have applications in the treatment and prophylaxis of different diseases. Understanding disease and the mechanisms involved can help us fight disease. When you look at illness through the lens of adaptive biology you can sometimes see medical problems in a new and thought-provoking light. Offering promise for therapeutic strategies in both experimental and clinical pathology, Adaptive Biology and Medicine: New Frontiers explores a new way of thinking about physiological adaptations and their link to disease development.
