Nuer Dilemmas

"Not just a brilliant restudy of one of anthropology's most famous 'peoples' but an exemplary historical ethnography that will be a landmark in the discipline. . . . With extraordinary sensitivity Hutchinson reveals how the Nuer have confronted the most profound moral, social, and political dilemmas of their—and our—changing world."—Lila Abu-Lughod, author of Writing Women's Worlds

This new 2023 edition of Nuer Dilemmas adds fresh material to Sharon E. Hutchinson's now widely-acclaimed and prize-winning historical ethnography about what became of the Nuer people of South(ern) Sudan after Evans-Pritchard completed his pioneering 1930s field studies. These new materials include a new Epilogue (in the Nuer language) in which she describes some of the personal security dilemmas she faced during her 1990s war-zone research while trying to cope with shifting governmental authorities in the field. The new edition also includes new illustrative materials and eliminates the former edition's appendix on comparative divorce rates. The new addition complements a new website (nuerdilemmas.com) which will soon be launched and will provide readers with access to a wealth of previously unpublished photographs and audio-tapes created by the author that add depth to her now "classic" ethnographic account. The new website will also provide readers with an English translation of the book's new Nuer-language Epilogue.

This book's 51 folktales belong collectively to the South Sudanese Nuer (Nath) people wherever they may reside. Each tale is presented first in the Nuer language (thok nath), followed by an English translation composed by Fr. Christian Carlassare. Michael Thilyang Gatkek and Peter Jur Gai collected most of the oral material on which this book is based. The book will appeal to multiple audiences of diverse ages. First and foremost, Nuer readers will discover a unique entryway into their rich oral heritage that simultaneously preserves it for future generations in two written forms. Secondly, the book provides Nuer men and women with tools for sharing their creative cultural and linguistic heritage with neighboring people in South Sudan and the world at large. For the children of war-displaced Nuer refugee populations now scattered across the globe, it opens up novel and entertaining means for cross-generational communication and understanding. For scholars and students of anthropology, history and political science, it promises fresh insights into one of Africa's most studied and most celebrated cultural communities.

Worlds of Power

With Christian revivals (including Evangelicals in the White House), Islamic radicalism and the revitalisation of traditional religions it is clear that the world is not heading towards a community of secular states. Nowhere are religious thought and political practice more closely intertwined than in Africa. African migrants in Europe and America who send home money to build churches and mosques, African politicians who consult diviners, guerrilla fighters who believe that amulets can protect them from bullets, and ordinary people who seek ritual healing: all of these are applying religious ideas to everyday problems of existence, at every level of society. Far from falling off the map of t...

Researching Violence in Africa

Researching violence and conflict can be challenging for a variety of reasons, including security risks to researchers and informants, restricted or lack of access to informants and field sites, and poor reliability of official data. Traditional methodological approaches may need to be adapted, and new methods may be called for. In addition, such research carries ethical challenges about representation of informants and information and possible use of the research for harmful ends. This book, drawing on research conducted throughout Africa in conflict zones and other insecure environments, considers the everyday dilemmas researchers face. It provides essential contributions to ongoing challenging debates about the use of alternative and mixed methods in social science research.
