This book is the second of two volumes in an edited collection that brings together the unpublished letters of the extended Clairmont family, for the first time. The letters, housed in the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle at the New York Public Library, inform our understanding of the Shelley-Godwin circle through the experiences and thoughts of their descendants. The correspondence also enables us to see into the contemporary social history of nineteenth-century families living in Europe and Australia, dealing with subjects such as the conflicts in Europe, woes in the European financial markets, and the effects of Australian pioneer life on immigrants to that country. The Clairmont Family Letters, 1839–1889 improves upon scholarship made by other Shelley and Clairmont collections and is furnished with editorial notes and apparatus from Dr. Sharon Joffe. The Clairmont Family Journals 1855-1885
This edition presents the extant journals of Pauline Clairmont (1825-1891) and Wilhelm Clairmont (1831-1895), the niece and nephew of Claire Clairmont (1798-1879) who was Mary Shelley's (1797-1851) stepsister. It also includes a journal originally attributed to Pauline but which likely was Walter Gaulis Clairmont's (1868-1958; Wilhelm's son). All three journals are currently deposited in the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle at the New York Public Library. Victoria's Lost Pavilion
This book explores the significance of the now-lost pavilion built in the Buckingham Palace Gardens in the time of Queen Victoria for understanding experiments in British art and architecture at the outset of the Victorian era. It introduces the curious history of the garden pavilion, its experimental contents, the controversies of its critical reception, and how it has been digitally remediated. The chapters discuss how the pavilion, decorated with frescos and encaustics by some of the most prominent painters of the mid-nineteenth century, became the center of a national conversation about an identity for British art, the capacity of its artists, and the quality of Royal and public taste. Beyond an examination of the pavilion's history, this book also introduces a digital model which restores the pavilion to virtual life, underscoring the importance of the pavilion for Victorian aesthetics and culture.

This collection of essays expands critical consideration of Mary Shelley’s placement within the age we call “Romantic,” wherein her texts converse with those of her family, her circle, and her contemporaries. Several essays address particularly how her texts interact with those of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, revealing new depth and breadth to their literary partnership. Others investigate interdisciplinary perspectives, such as her pieces in The Liberal or the ways in which the figure of Scheherezade haunts her works, while several essays also consider Mary Shelley’s textual relationships with contemporaries such as Thomas Moore and John Polidori. Still others tackle topics such as geopolitical relationships and the growth of opera as an art form, considering Mary Shelley’s commentary upon such contemporary issues, while William Godwin’s textual relationship with his daughter is further investigated. This collection suggests Mary Shelley’s texts merit further investigation not only for what they reveal about their author and her oeuvre, but for the ways in which they illuminate our understanding of the contexts in which they were composed.
