She was fifteen, and had dreams of a vocation and a family. Suddenly the breadth and depth of cancer shattered that dream. But this girl purposed in her heart to face the unknown. Little did she know who all would come to help her become a woman of courage. It didn’t seem possible that this girl could be a champion while the machines gave her life. The first challenge was the side effects of chemotherapy, but the bigger challenge was an infection. Nurses, doctors, chaplains, parents, and many friends took turns keeping this champion alive in PICU. Learning to talk, write, and walk again was a new and bigger challenge. There were the therapists, child life specialists, schoolteachers, and awesome nurses who came to help this young champion. Throwing the stuffed cow at the doctors was not only therapy, it was fun. Then a special gospel singer by the name of Karen Wheaton put a vision into Sassy. If God had called her to this challenge, she would walk worthily of that calling.

The New Feminist Agenda

Feminists opened up thousands of doors in the 1960s and 1970s, but decades later, are U.S. women where they thought they'd be? The answer, it turns out, is a resounding no. Surely there have been gains. Women now comprise nearly 60 percent of college undergraduates and half of all medical and law students. They have entered the workforce in record numbers, making the two-wage-earner family the norm. But combining a career and family turned out to be more complicated than expected. While women changed, social structures surrounding work and family remained static. Affordable and high-quality child care, paid family leave, and equal pay for equal work remain elusive for the vast majority of wo...

Financial Reckoning Day

"History shows that people who save and invest grow and prosper, and the others deteriorate and collapse. As Financial Reckoning Day demonstrates, artificiallylow interest rates and rapid credit creation policies set by AlanGreenspan and the Federal Reserve caused the bubble in U.S. stocksof the late '90s. . . . Now, policies being pursued at the Fed aremaking the bubble worse. They are changing it from a stock marketbubble to a consumption and housing bubble. And when those bubbles burst, it's going to be worse than the stockmarket bubble . . . No one, of course, wants to hear it. They want the quick fix. Theywant to buy the stock and watch it go up twenty-five percentbecause that's what hap...

The Hudson

The Hudson River has always played a vital role in American culture. Flowing through a valley of sublime scenery, the great river uniquely connects America's past with its present and future. This book traces the course of the river through four centuries, recounting the stories of explorers and traders, artists and writers, entrepreneurs and industrialists, ecologists and preservationists-those who have been shaped by the river as well as those who have helped shape it. Their compelling narratives attest to the Hudson River's distinctive place in American history and the American imagination. Among those who have figured in the history of the Hudson are Benedict Arnold, Alexander Hamilton, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the Astors and the Vanderbilts, and Thomas Cole of the Hudson River school. Their stories appear here, alongside those of such less famous individuals as the surveyor who found the source of the Hudson and the engineer who tried to build a hydroelectric plant at Storm King Mountain. Inviting us to view the river from a wider perspective than ever before, this entertaining and enlightening book is worthy of its grand subject.

Mobilizing the Metropolis

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has morphed in ways that would be unrecognizable to its founders. Its mission evolved from improving rail freight to building motor vehicle crossings, airports, office towers, and industrial parks and taking control of a failing commuter rail line. In its early years, the agency was often viewed with admiration; however as it drew up plans, negotiated to take control of airfields and marine terminals, and constructed large bridges and tunnels, the Port Authority became the object of less favorable attention. It was attacked as a “super-government” that must be reined in, while the mayors of New York and Newark argued that it should be broken ...
