Iron Balloons: Hit Fiction from Jamaica's Calabash Writer's Workshop

Jamaica’s literary lion Colin Channer presents new fiction from the freshest young Jamaican authors and the Calabash International Literary Festival’s Extended Family. Reggae’s rebel spirit blazes in this hot selection of short fiction from Jamaica’s Calabash Writer’s Workshop. Set in the Caribbean and the USA, the stories sweep across a range of moods and genres to create a narrative LP of fascinating voices. From the old lady who gives a “how to” speech on beating children, to the schizophrenic singer who thinks he’s Bob Marley, to the hotel maid who gets a sexual offer that she can’t refuse, the diverse mix of characters are linked by the fundamental principle that all clichéd conventions must be shouted off the page. In the proudly odd tradition of Jamaican music, the selections seek to entertain while asking daring questions that provoke new ideas into being. New writing from: Colin Channer, Marlon James, Elizabeth Nunez, Kwame Dawes, Kaylie Jones, Geoffrey Philp, Rudolph Wallace, Konrad Kirlew, Alwin Bully, A-dziko Simba, and Sharon Leach.

Before planet Earth was called into being, the power of Darkness prevailed, absolute in its totality, uncompromising in its persistence. Then, the word was spoken, ""Let there be Light."" Darkness acquiesced, grudgingly. Since that time, Darkness has endeavored to reclaim its dominance over the presence of Light. Through a relentless regimen of manipulation, seduction and fear, the power of Darkness continues to, aggressively increase its casualty count against humanity. The Calendar is a parable about a coastal, New England town that stands, obviously, in the cross-hairs of the power of Darkness. A church, at the center of the town, represents the crowning jewel that must be claimed to memorialize the significance of this victory. Darkness summons its faithful minion, the spirit of Death. Immediately, the church's pastor of 42 years succumbs, leaving its flock without a shepherd. Darkness, then instructs its disciples to concoct a diabolical plan to bring in a replacement pastor who will answer...

“Hi, ma’am. I’m sorry to bother you, but a woman was wandering around your property. She looked lost. She told me she was waiting for a friend named Gayle and that she had dropped her off here. I didn’t have the heart to watch the missus stand outside. I offered to let her sit in my car.” He pointed toward the squad car and looked down at his clipboard. Flipping pages, he said, “She said her name is ...” He stopped and pointed to a line on his notepad. “Pauline Graham,” we said in unison. “So, you know her?” The officer looked at me with cool eyes, smiled, and put down his notepad. “Yes, sir.” My voice was shaking. The moment I had waited a lifetime for was finally here, but I didn’t know what to do. I was terrified about the thought of meeting her. It had been so many years. I took a deep breath.

My Vision of Hell

My Vision of Hell: A Sacrifice for Others to See is the title of my book. It is about a dream that God gave to me in 1992. By the end of that same year, I backslid, and after a period of repentance, in 1995, God gave me the order in which to write about it. I was in such a struggle in starting to even write, because regrettably I backslid again in 1996. I realized that this job was not for me. And I knew that God had definitely got the wrong person to write for him. It was in December 2003 when God audibly spoke in my ears, "I've called imperfect people for perfect tasks, and in me [in him] are great victories." Then he said, "Write it down, put it in a book, and tell my people, tell my churches that "HELL, IT IS REAL!"
