Current Opinions in the Kyoto Cornea Club

Preface During the past two decades, a significant international research exchange has taken place in order to understand the pathobiology of corneal diseases, and to develop more sophisticated treatments. For this purpose, many Japanese cornea specialists have been abroad to the United States, the United Kingdom, etc., to perform collaborative works in basic and clinical cornea research. As a result, many original concepts and thoughts have been produced from Japan, and some of them are now accepted world wide. Further to promote the international exchange of current knowledge and research on corneas in both health and disease, the First Annual Meeting of the Kyoto Cornea Club was held in K...

Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film, and Dry Eye Syndromes 2

During the past two decades, a significant international research effort has been di rected toward understanding the composition and regulation of the preocular tear film. This effort has been motivated by the recognition that the tear film plays an essential role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting against microbial challenge, and preserving visual acuity. In addition, research has been stimulated by the knowledge that alteration or deficiency of the tear film, which occurs in countless individuals throughout the world, may lead to desiccation of the ocular surface, ulceration and perfo ration of the cornea, an increased incidence of infectious disease, and, potent...

Corneal Dystrophies

Corneal Dystrophies

Corneal dystrophies (CD) are bilateral hereditary disorders of the cornea in which one or several parts of the cornea lose their transparency. As the dystrophy can start in different layers of the cornea, they are classified accordingly as epithelial dystrophies, stromal dystrophies and endothelial dystrophies. This volume includes a description of the new international IC3D classification of CD reflecting what we currently know of the clinical, pathological, and genetic aspects of these disorders. Further contributions give an insight into differential diagnostics and histology, which can confirm the diagnosis as for instance in granular CD type 2, as well as DNA analysis of CD providing additional information about the pathogenesis. Also, procedures such as the phototherapeutic keratectomy with the excimer laser, the new modalities of lamellar keratoplasty, and penetrating keratoplasty are described. This publication holds a wealth of new and topical information on CD for ophthalmologists and geneticists alike.

This second volume continues with a focus on the state of the art in genetic eye research in Asia and the Pacific. Though there has been an explosion of information on genetic eye research in western countries, more than sixty percent of the human genes involved in eye diseases in the Asian and Pacific population remain unknown. However, new efforts and a new awareness have sparked important discussions on the subject, and new plans are being implemented to discover the genes responsible for many eye diseases in the population. The book reviews the latest findings; its content ranges from genetic aspects of human migration to DNA sequence analysis, genome-wide association analysis, and disea...

Advances in Corneal Research

These Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on the Cornea continue a tradition of summarizing the state-of-the art basic and clinical research in cornea and ex ternal diseases since the first Congress was held in 1964. Reflecting the emerging impor tance of refractive surgery, two of the twelve sessions of the Congress were devoted to refractive surgery; this is reflected in an emphasis in these Proceedings. In addition, an en tire session was devoted to the molecular and cellular biology of the cornea with impor tant new information on the role of growth factors and cytokine modulation of corneal wound healing. Within these Proceedings an international group of expert researchers...

Modern Keratoplasty

Keratoplasty techniques have evolved in the last 15 years into a variety of forms, which have diversified the previous monographic presence of the penetrating keratoplasty technique. The development of anterior lamellar graft (DALK), and posterior lamellar graft (DSAEK), makes an important change in the approach to lamellar surgery. Later on, the appearance of DMEK and superficial lamellar keratectomy broadened the spectrum. Today, intralamellar surgery has evolved with a number of techniques that involve stromal enhancement with biologically active or acellular corneal laminas from donors, customized lenticles from SMILE surgeries or customized by corneal topography, and more recently, c...
