Advances in Wireless Networks
Recent years have witnessed tremendous growth in the population of mobile users demanding high performance, reliability and quality-of-service (QoS). Wireless networks are undergoing rapid developments and dramatic changes in the underlying technologies, in order to cope with the difficulties posed by the scarce wireless resource as well as keep up with the increasing day-to-day demand for cost-effective service of multimedia applications. Predicting and optimising the performance and QoS of wireless networks using analytical modelling, simulation experiments, monitoring and testbed-based measurements are crucial to the proper design, tuning, resource management and capacity planning of such networks. This book is dedicated to review important developments and results, explore recent state-of-the-art research and discuss new strategies for performance modelling, analysis and enhancement of wireless networks. The objective is to make analytical modelling, simulation and measurement tools, and innovative performance evaluation methodology possible and understandable to a wider audience.
Multimedia Communications and Video Coding
This book constitutes the proceedings of the International Symposium on Multimedia Communications and Video Coding (ISMCVC95) held October 11 - 13, 1995, at the Poly technic University in Brooklyn, New York. This Symposium was organized under the aus pices of the New York State funded Center for Advanced Technology in Telecommunications (CATT), in cooperation with the Communications Society and the Signal Processing Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). In preparing this book, we have summarized the topics presented in various sessions of the Symposium, including the keynote addresses, the Service Provider and Vendor Session, the Panel Discussion, as well as the twelve Technical Sessions. This summary is presented in the Introduction. 'Full papers submitted by the presenters are organized into eleven chapters, divided into three parts. Part I focuses on systems issues in multimedia communications. Part II concentrates on video coding algorithms. Part III discusses the interplay between video coding and network control for video delivery over various channels.
Network Management and Control
Three speakers at the Second Workshop on Network Management and Control nostalgically remembered the INTEROP Conference at which SNMP was able to interface even to CD players and toasters. We agreed this was indeed a major step forward in standards, but wondered if anyone noticed whether the toast was burned, let alone, would want to eat it. The assurance of the correct operation of practical systems under difficult environments emerged as the dominant theme of the workshop with growth, interoperability, performance, and scalability as the primary sub-themes. Perhaps this thrust is un surprising, since about half the 100 or so attendees were from industry, with a strong contingency of users. Indeed the technical program co-chairs, Shivendra Panwar of Polytechnic and Walter Johnston of NYNEX, took as their assignment the coverage of real problems and opportunities in industry. Nevertheless we take it as a real indication of progress in the field that the community is beginning to take for granted the availability of standards and even the ability to detect physical, link, and network-level faults and is now expecting diagnostics at higher levels as well as system-wide solutions.
