While official Chinese history has always been written from a centrist viewpoint, Chieftains into Ancestors describes the intersection of imperial administration and chieftain-dominated local culture in the culturally diverse southwestern region of China. Contemplating the rhetorical question of how one can begin to rewrite the story of a conquered people whose past was never transcribed in the first place, the authors combine anthropological fieldwork with historical textual analysis to build a new regional history – one that recognizes the ethnic, religious, and gendered transformations that took place in China’s nation-building process.
The Ming dynasty was the last great Chinese dynasty before the Manchu conquest in 1644. During that time, China, not Europe, was the centre of the world. The author examines the changing landscape of life over the three centuries of Ming (1368-1644).

Beneficial Microbes for Sustainable Agriculture under Abiotic Stress: Funtional Traits and Regulation highlights the potential for microbe-mediated stress phytolerance to be improved by presenting multiple scenarios of application and results. In most research and studies, abiotic stress is applied singularly to specific plants inoculated with a bioinoculum or a bacterial consortium to isolate specific plant-microbe responses. However, in reality, plants are continually exposed to a multitude of different stresses simultaneously occurring. This book presents bacteria functional traits and bacteria-mediated plant responses under both specific or combined stress conditions. Collectively, it pr...

Nutraceuticals are foods or food constituents that provide medical or health benefits, including the prevention and/or treatment of a disease. Nutraceuticals have advantage over conventional medicines because they can avoid side effects and can take the place of a natural dietary supplement, among other benefits. Nutraceuticals are typically grouped on the basis of their natural source or chemical grouping, or categorized into nutrients, herbals, dietary supplements, dietary fiber, and so forth. Within the nutraceutical industry, the most rapid growth has been in natural/herbal products and dietary supplements, the latter of which are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure their safety Herbal nutraceuticals are used as powerful instruments in maintaining health and to act against nutritionally-induced acute and chronic diseases, thereby promoting optimal health, longevity, and quality of life.
Qing China (1644–1912) witnessed a resurgence in architectural painting, a traditional subject category known as jiehua, or boundary painting. Drawing Boundaries concerns itself with the symbolic implications of this impressive and little studied reflorescence. Beginning with a concise and well-illustrated history of the evolution of the tradition, this exciting new study reveals how these images were deployed in the Manchu (Qing) imperial court to define political, social, or cultural boundaries. Characterized by grand conception and regal splendor, the paintings served to enhance the imperial authority of rulers and, to a segment of the elite, to advertise social status. Drawing Boundari...
