The growing mobility of people within and into the Asia Pacific region has created environments of increasing diversity as nations become hosts to both permanent and temporary multicultural societies. How do we begin to gauge the impact of mobility and multiculturalism on individuals and groups in this diverse region today? The authors of The Asia Pacific in the Age of Transnational Mobility turn to social media as a tool of inquiry to map how mobile subjects and minorities articulate their sense of community and identity. The authors see social media as a platform that allows users to document and express their individual and collective identities, sometimes in restrictive communication environments, while providing a sense of belonging and agency. They present original empirical work that attempts to help readers understand how mobile subjects who circulate in the Asia Pacific create a sense of community for themselves and articulate their ethnic, ideological and national identities.

Peasants in the Making

This study of the so-called Green Revolution in the rice bowl region of Malaysia aims to provide an interpretation of recent changes in the Malaysian agrarian structure, and to make an analytical and theoretical contribution to the long-standing intellectual debate on the agrarian question. By joining the micro-world of household social structure and economy to the macro-world of changes in production relations, it traces out a specific trajectory of agrarian development in Malaysia.

In the field of Malay Studies, the traditional artist is among the most mysterious of beings, deeply buried under a tradition that was oral and anonymous. He is more enigmatic now, more than ever before, as he is further alienated from us, by the technological development, the different modes of literary communication, and not the least, by the disappearance of the rural environment that created the artist - all of these factors much influencing his mind. There is no doubt that much as he felt (rasa) the world, he also thought, fikir, about it, about its universe, the powers that governed his life, the community, its values, the arts and what made them please and so on.

Insights into Various Aspects of Oral Health

Chronic inflammation such as seen in periodontitis and its bidirectional influence on the systemic health has been of increased interest for a decade. In this text book, we have explored the biological and genetic pathways by which periodontal diseases may influence these disease processes and vice versa. Occlusal rehabilitation using the MEAW technique for the effective treatment of class II deep bite malocclusion and the timely management of cleft lip and palate to benefit the holistic welfare of the patient are presented here. The book addresses the development of bioinspired functionally graded dental restorative materials and also a simulation method that can improve clinical durability and enhance the functional capability of the dentition and indirect prostheses. In conclusion, various pathways for the promotion of oral health with evidence-based concepts are considered.

Sentence Analysis in Modern Malay

This is a detailed application of the methods of linguistic analysis to the sentence structure of Malay. It is based on extended analysis of short dramatic texts in colloquial Malay by Dato' Dr Haji Zainal-Abidin bin Ahmad, best know under his pen name Za'ba. Miss Lewis' analyses are, with certain modifications, kept within the grammatical framework which she deduced from a thesis presented by Dr E. M. F. Payne in 1964. She has shown that the framework is viable when applied to actual texts, though her analysis leads to certain modifications and extensions of the original plan. The book has a double interest. Students with a basic knowledge of Malay will find that the investigation into sentence formation refines their understanding of the language. Linguists interested in the application of a formal grammatical framework to the sentences of a Austronesian language will welcome this pioneer study.
