The Spiral Gospel
How did the author of the Gospel of Luke intend it to be read? In The Spiral Gospel, Rob James shows that the assumptions many modern readers bring to the text – that it claims to be historically factual, or merely regurgitates existing stories – are not those of antiquity. Building on the central insight that it was written for a community who would have used it as their pre-eminent text, James argues convincingly for a continuous, cyclical reading of Luke’s narrative. The evidence for this view, and also its consequences, can be seen in the gospel’s intratextuality. Context is given at the end of the gospel that informs the beginning, and there are countless other intratextual elements throughout the text that are most readily noticeable on a second or subsequent reading. This deliberate, creative interweaving on the author’s part opens up new levels of appreciation and faith for those who read in the way Luke’s first audience received his work.

When We All Go Home
Paying special attention to chapters 56-66, David Baer analyses the labour that resulted in the Greek Isaiah. He compares the Greek text with extant Hebrew texts and with early biblical versions to show that the translator has approached his craft with homiletical interests in mind. This earliest translator of Isaiah produces a preached text, at the same time modifying his received tradition in theological and nationalistic directions which would reach their full flower in Targumic and Rabbinical literature. In basic agreement with recent work on other portions of the Septuagint, the Greek Isaiah is seen to be an elegant work of Hellenistic literature whose linguistic fluidity expresses the convictions and longings of a deeply Palestinian soul.
Scripture in Transition
Altogether 46 essays in honour of Professor Raija Sollamo contribute to explore various aspects of the rich textual material around the turn of the era. At that time Scripture was not yet fixed; various writings and collections of writings were considered authoritative but their form was more or less in transition. The appearance of the first biblical translations are part of this transitional process.
