Sigrid Scholtz Novak was born October 4, 1931 in Reichenbach, East Germany. She went to school in Breslau, Silesia, and after the war in Jever and Wilhelmshaven, North Germany. She studied in London and Paris before coming to America where she completed her studies at the Johns Hopkins University. There she earned an MA in Creative Writing (1968) and the Ph.D. in German (1972). Never Too Old for Adventure Two Octogenarians Abroad
This book is an excursion into the thoughts and experiences of two enterprising octogenarians: a German wife and her Texas husband. They return to Europe for one year of home exchanges with various partners in several cities and countries: Austria, France, Germany, and Poland. The correspondences are presented chronologically, paired with cultural insights, memories of the cities and villages as they were decades ago, and the new adventures they embark on with people they encounter and relatives they visit along the way. We promised our U.S. family we would write regular reports of our whereabouts and keep them informed of our activities abroad. We kept our promise over the months, and this notebook is the collection of letters and pictures from our stay overseas. The trip took place from autumn 2007 through autumn 2008.

The Art of Comedy and Social Critique in Nineteenth-century Germany
During the mid-nineteenth century, Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer pursued a fifty-year career as a playwright and theater manager in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland at a time of the transformation of court theaters and itinerant troupes into commercial establishments staffed by middle-class professionals and subject to market forces. Although she has been undervalued by some critics past and present who considered her mainly as an adapter of contemporary novels, this study shows that with her thorough knowledge of the European dramatic tradition, her skill as a playwright, and above all her professionalism she overcame institutional and gender bias to develop a form of drama that integrated the social and economic changes of her time. The analysis focuses on her use of the subversive genre of comedy, the strategies she used to evade the censor, and her employment of assertive female and working-class characters. She revived commedia dell'arte techniques of the past while devising innovations that anticipated the subsequent course of drama as well as the film techniques of today.
