Francesca Woodman

In the thirty years since her death, FrancescaWoodman's work has retained an undeniable immediacy and continues to inspire a cult-like following of admirers.Woodman began photographing at the age of thirteen. By the time she enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975, she was already an accomplished photographer with a remarkably mature and focused approach to her work. At the age of twenty-two, she committed suicide. Woodman might be merely a tragic footnote in the history of photography were it not for the startlingly compelling, complex and artistically resolved body of work she produced during her short career. Her oeuvre represents a remarkably rich and singular exploration o...

Nicole Bottet

Nicole Bottet encapsulates time.0The singular expression of an artistic career that doesn't fit into any specific school, delicately presents itself and lets us into an intimate space, a sacred place of muted dialogues. Ungrounded and yet firmly rooted, her large paintings are paralleled by a long trail of letters, photos, old adverts.0A bouquet withers on the canvas, its petals fall onto a father's letter, a declaration of love bursts out of a tablecloth. Conversations become paintings. A red glow slips behind the mountain of letters.0The unique demonstration of the sweetness of life amid everyday torment, this painting brings us face to face with a nude haloed in light, a sun-drenched wall, it discovers the sparkle of a crystal, the spontaneity of a vivid red, a deep green. Suspended like a star, gold shines through the obscurity.0The work of Nicole Bottet can be seen in private collections and museums throughout Europe, Japan, China, the United States and Canada.0.

Sandy Skoglund. Catalogo Della Mostra (Torino, 24 Gennaio-24 Marzo 2019). Ediz. Illustrata

Jersey City-based photographer and installation artist Sandy Skoglund (born 1946) constructs sets featuring handmade sculptures and human characters, achieving the idea of a total work of art. In this way, her works are at once installations, sculptures, collages and, finally, photographs. Edited by the great Italian curator Germano Celant, this comprehensive monograph, comprised of more than 400 images, compiles Skoglund's photography, a discipline she broached in the 1970s, while in New York, in order to document her work. Ranging from the earliest photographic series of the mid '70s (which already feature the characteristic themes of the domestic setting and its transformation into a place of apparitions between the comical and the unsettling) to previously unpublished photographs that the photographer has recently created. Also included are specimens of the strange creatures that inhabit her photographs, the colorful sculptures of foxes, fish and other animals that play as foils to the otherwise everyday scenes of her tableaux.

On the 150th anniversary of the painter Henri Matisse (1869-1954), the Musée Matisse in Cateau-Cambrésis, which was founded by the artist in his hometown in 1952, pays tribute to the lesser-known man of the North, who became one of the greatest masters of the 20th century.0You thought you knew everything about Matisse's work? This exhibition reveals the mystery of the first 20 years of his career and the awakening of a genius moving from shadow to light. It honours his early works from the revelation of painting, and his academic training until the end of his academic studies in Paris, where he taught until 1911.0This decisive and defining period of his identity helps us to understand how he grew into a painter on his Hauts-de-France lands. It dissects the creative process of the man copying the ancients, drawing inspiration from the greatest masters of the past and his contemporaries, to shake the codes with 'luxury, calm and voluptuousness' and impose himself on the rank of those he has contemplated.00Exhibition: Musée Matisse, Cateau-Cambrésis, France (09.11.2019 - 09.02.2020).

Lead in Glassy Materials in Cultural Heritage

Although the development of lead crystal was a major step in the history of glass in the late 17th century, the presence of lead in vitreous matrices (glass and glazes) is much older, dating back to the second millennium BCE. Lead in Glassy Materials in Cultural Heritage traces the history of these skills and also looks at the most recent developments in materials science concerning the role played by lead in the properties of glass, including coloring. It develops an understanding of weathering processes and notions of the durability of leaded glass. It also examines public health issues and current recommended standards for the use of lead in industrial glass. This multidisciplinary book is intended for a wide audience: art and technical historians, museum curators, restorers, materials specialists, manufacturers and engineers.

Etruscology

This handbook has two purposes: it is intended (1) as a handbook of Etruscology or Etruscan Studies, offering a state-of-the-art and comprehensive overview of the history of the discipline and its development, and (2) it serves as an authoritative reference work representing the current state of knowledge on Etruscan civilization. The organization of the volume reflects this dual purpose. The first part of the volume is dedicated to methodology and leading themes in current research, organized thematically, whereas the second part offers a diachronic account of Etruscan history, culture, religion, art & archaeology, and social and political relations and structures, as well as a systematic treatment of the topography of the Etruscan civilization and sphere of influence.
