Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes is arguably the best midfielder of his generation. As a graduate of the legendary Class of ’92, he has managed to win every major trophy British football has to offer. A key component of the Manchester United youth team that unleashed David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, and the Neville brothers upon the unsuspecting Premier League, he helped revolutionize Ferguson’s Reds and powered them to domestic ane European dominance in the 1990s. The international stage also beckoned Scholes, who scored 14 goals in 65 caps for his country. However, ever devoted to his beloved Reds, the midfielder retired from the national side at just 29 to concentrate on events at Old Trafford at a...

Enid Seeney designed her now iconic 'Homemaker' range of ceramic tableware in 1956. Two years later it was taken up by the retail chain Woolworths and was mass produced until 1970. It is difficult to know how many of these pieces were made over a couple of decades, but they are still relatively easy to come by, though millions must have been thrown away when they had either served their purpose or fallen out of fashion. They have become a Fifties design icon partly because of their look, but more importantly because they depict typical interior accessories that have become irreversibly connected to the 1950s. The design was extremely popular, largely due to the use of Woolworths as exclusive retailer. At the time, Woolworths was one of the main high street outlets for affordable, but relatively well-designed interior accessories. The store was to supply many financially strapped newly-wed couples with the necessities of life throughout the Fifties and Sixties.

The first full-length biography of a brilliant, self-taught inventor whose innovations in information and energy technology continue to shape our world. The Economist called Stanford R. Ovshinsky (1922–2012) “the Edison of our age,” but this apt comparison doesn't capture the full range of his achievements. As an independent, self-educated inventor, Ovshinsky not only created many important devices but also made fundamental discoveries in materials science. This book offers the first full-length biography of a visionary whose energy and information innovations continue to fuel our post-industrial economy. In The Man Who Saw Tomorrow, Lillian Hoddeson and Peter Garrett tell the story of...

This Restless Life

We often live in transit, shifting between jobs, cities and countries, trying to build communities in a virtual world, but longing - maybe before dropping off to sleep at night - for some stronger connection. The savage playground of speed dating. High-risk, low-loyalty workplaces, scattered around the world. Friendships and love affairs conducted through technology. Globalisation and the long boom have changed the way young people love, work and travel. In This Restless Life, journalist Brigid Delaney looks at the impact that hyper-mobility and the excesses of consumer culture have had on the restless generation. She hears stories from young Australians in the departure lounges of outer Lon...

Martin O'Neill is one of the most brilliant, successful and intriguing of the new manager/coaches to emerge from British football. Alex Montgomery's acclaimed biography brings O'Neill's story right up to date with an account of his first few months in charge at Aston Villa and deals with every aspect of his life and remarkable career from the early days as a player in Northern Ireland to his joining the tyrannical Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest. From non-league Grantham Town via Shepshed Dynamo and Wycombe Wanderers, to Norwich City, Leicester City and Celtic, where he broke the Rangers monopoly of Scottish football, to respected BBC pundit and a new role at Aston Villa, the book chronicles O'Neill's managerial triumphs. Montgomery offers a rare insight into the beliefs, lifestyle and ambitions of this private and complex football man.
