A New Companion to the Romance Languages

The Romance languages offer unique potential for empirical analysis and methodological innovation within the vast field of linguistics, due to the survival of a large body of historical documentation, the rich diversity of dialects and languages, and the exceptional quality of the research undertaken to date. However, these same factors have led to an ever-increasing volume of material available for study, requiring the establishment of a shared canonical knowledge base. This companion offers a balanced overview of the core subjects and the methodology which make up the field of Romance linguistics. It provides a solid foundation in the discipline as well as easy and convenient access to hig...

A Life in Linguistics

Alexandra Cornilescu is an internationally renowned linguist, whose pioneering ideas have been influential in developing generative grammar in Romania, Europe and beyond. The weightiness of her contributions to the field is matched only by her talent for disseminating them. Ever since 1970, when she started teaching at the University of Bucharest, she has continuously played a tireless and inspirational role in the creation of several generations of linguists, which the academic world has come to admiringly refer to as The Bucharest School. As the initiator of the AICED conference, held annually in the English Department at the University of Bucharest, she has turned it into one of the leading platforms of generative linguistics in Europe. She has published extensively on Romanian and English linguistics and is also the founder and past editor of the journal Bucharest Working Papers in Linguistics. On the occasion of her 75th birthday, her friends, students and colleagues celebrate Alexandra Cornilescu’s work with this collection of essays on various topics of current theoretical interest.

From Glosses to Dictionaries

This book presents—through a series of nine high quality essays by international scholars—the beginnings of the lexicographic tradition and the appearance of the first mono- and multilingual dictionaries in various language areas across the world, paying particular attention to their dependence on glosses and glossaries. The contributions analyze, on the basis of significant case studies, how dictionaries first emerged in a wide spectrum of cultures, ranging from Greek Antiquity to 9th-century Japan, from Medieval Britain to 15th-century Poland. In this way, the book highlights both similarities and differences among these traditions, and allows a global and comparative approach to the history of lexicography in its earliest phases, a topic which, up until now, has usually been studied only within single languages and cultures.

Re-Configuring Romanian Culture on its Way Towards Modernity

As a direct result of an international conference organized in the year 2021, the volume tries to shed light on the way in which the translation activity contributed to the Romanian culture and language, drawing from different traditions and cultures it came in contact with (directly or indirectly), and thus mingling the own Slavonic church tradition with the new and revolutionary ideas of the Western world and using this mix to modernise the society, language and the politics in this region. Furthermore, this eclectic collection of articles highlights the fact that it was neither the exclusive merit of the Transylvanian scholars, nor of the Moldavian or Wallachian ones to have contributed d...
