This book reports new findings in the fields of nonlinear optics, quantum optics and optical microscopy. It presents the first experimental device able to transform an input Gaussian beam into a non-diffracting Bessel-like beam. The modulation mechanism, i.e. electro-optic effect, allows the device to be fast, miniaturizable and integrable into solid state arrays. Also presented is an extensive study of the superposition of Bessel beams and their propagation in turbid media, with the aim of realizing field that is both localized and non-diffracting. These findings have been implemented in a light-sheet microscope to improve the optical sectioning. From a more theoretical point of view this work also tackles the problem of whether and how a single particle is able to entangle two distant systems. The results obtained introduce fundamental limitations on the use of linear optics for quantum technology. Other chapters are dedicated to a number of experiments carried out on disordered ferroelectrics including negative intrinsic mass dynamics, ferroelectric supercrystals, rogue wave dynamics driven by enhanced disorder and first evidence of spatial optical turbulence.
Vols. for 1963- include as pt. 2 of the Jan. issue: Medical subject headings.
This practical surgical atlas focuses on a variety of surgical procedures in a portable format, allowing students, residents and even attending surgeons to carry it around with them throughout the day to check up on operations at any given time. The comprehensive illustrations help the reader to understand the procedures described, thanks to inter-operative photographs which provide accurate representations of the various techniques of the operations. The wide scope of this book ensures coverage of the most common general surgery procedures and the most common operations that faculty, residents and students encounter.
The ten-volume set LNCS 12949 – 12958 constitutes the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, ICCSA 2021, which was held in Cagliari, Italy, during September 13 – 16, 2021. The event was organized in a hybrid mode due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 466 full and 18 short papers presented in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from 1588 submissions. The books cover such topics as multicore architectures, mobile and wireless security, sensor networks, open source software, collaborative and social computing systems and tools, cryptography, human computer interaction, software design engineering, and others. Part II of...

This book presents cutting-edge research and developments in the broad field of medical, biological engineering and computing. This is the first volume of the joint proceedings of the Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing (MEDICON) and the International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering (CMBEBIH), which were held together on September 14-16, 2023, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Contributions report on advances in biomedical signal processing and bioimaging, medical physics, and pharmaceutical engineering. Further, they cover applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in healthcare.
