Siamo a Firenze nel 1921, le squadracce fasciste imperversano in città e si organizzano i gruppi di autodifesa socialisti e comunisti. Gli scontri sono all'ordine del giorno e il giovane fascista Giovanni Berta viene prima malmenato e poi gettato da un ponte nell'Arno. Immediatamente i fascisti trasformarono questo fatto in un martirio, enfatizzando la brutalità e la ferocia delle masse operaie. A queste dovevano porre un argine l'indomita fede e il senso di sacrificio dei sostenitori del fascismo.
