Sherrington

So much has been written about the scientific contributions of Sherrington that the man himself, and his thoughts, have been overshadowed. More and more, students of history are calling for creative writing on the whole man, particularly when he is a genius. Those interested in the genesis of ideas want to know the settings for discoveries and the relevant circumstances which ushered in new truths and new insights. The "prepared mind" which Pasteur saw as the only one to be "favoured by fortune" is of immense importance in science, and our account of Sherring ton, we hope, will fill a very real gap in this field. During his life Sherrington actively discouraged any sugges tions that a biography be written. For that reason it was not until 1947 that there were any biographical notes by John Fulton, Graham Brown and A. D. Ritchie in a number of the British Medical Journal commemorating his ninetieth birthday, and in addition there was a leading article entitled "The Influence of Sherrington on Oinical Neurology". He left no autobiographical material except the few pages of reminiscences entitled "Mar ginalia", an essay written in honour of Charles Singer (1953).

"This selection of extracts and full reprints from the classical papers of Sir Charles Sherrington is designed both as a testimonial to their author and as a source book for those concerned with the problems of reflex physiology ... The subjects dealt with include the innervation of muscles, the pattern of the skin segments, the spinal animal and its reactions, and the development of modern conceptions of reciprocal innervation, reflex posture, inhibition, and cortical localization. Appended to the text there is a complete bibliography of Sheridan's writings." -- Book jacket

The Sticky Synapse

The molecular mechanisms, which are responsible for the functional differences between the various types of neuronal synapses, have become one of the central themes of modern neurobiology. It is becoming increasingly clear that a misregulation of synaptogenesis and synaptic remodeling and dysfunctional neuronal synapses are at the heart of several human diseases, both neurological disorders and psychiatric conditions. As synapses present specialized cellular junctions between neurons and their target cells, it may not come as a surprise that neural cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are of special importance for the genesis and the maintenance of synaptic connections. Genes encoding adhesive mol...

The Endeavour of Jean Fernel

Originally published in 1946, this book examines the writing and controversy of Jean Fernel's The Natural Part of Medicine, the 1542 publication that attempted to replace Galen's treatise on physiology. Sherrington assesses Fernel's impact on the field of medical writing, and includes multiple plates illustrating early editions of Fernel's treatise and important figures of the day. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in medical history.
