Estonia, the New EU Economy
Estonia is regarded by many as one of the most hopeful cases for the integration of eastern Europe into the enlarged European Union. It provides positive examples of how the integration process can be well handled, but at the same time some of the contentious issues this can give rise to. This book assesses the tensions involved in the development of the Estonian economy in terms of growth, convergence, financial development, labour reallocation, structural and organizational change, and the role of foreign companies and international networks. The analysis of Estonia is placed within a broader context and among a wider set of nations, and thus aims at understanding the potential for growth and structural change in the eastern part of the enlarged EU. From System Transformation to European Integration
Science and technology in the former socialist Central and East European countries underwent a period of transformation in the last decade of the 20th century. With respect to the past, this represents the restructuring of the old system; with respect to the 21st century, however, it was the turbulent starting phase in the transition to new national innovation systems. Based on the authors' many years of research in this area the book analyses these processes in detail for 14 countries, reveals common features and differences in the transitional phase and inferres the prospects for the development of science and technology in Eastern Europe in the framework of EU enlargement.
Unemployment in Transition
The emergence of open unemployment is an unavoidable consequence of postcommunist transition. Some countries-notably in the former Soviet Union-initially slowed economic contraction. But in the longer run slower reformers have generally sustained deeper and more prolonged recessions than faster reforming central European countries. Moreover, the initially low unemployment rates in the former Soviet Union are now rising, and may stabilise at higher post-transition equilibrium rates than in Central Europe.
The Economics of Structural Change in Knowledge
This book provides an elaboration upon the concept of knowledge from an economic viewpoint. However this is not a book on economics of knowledge, at least not in the conventional sense. Most of the existing books on the matter have focused on the treatment of knowledge in terms of properties of knowledge as an economic good, incentive schemes for the creation of knowledge, issues about the codified/tacit nature of knowledge and the like.
Transition in the Baltic States
Much has been written about the speed and complexity of the transition throughout Central and Eastern Europe and former parts of the Soviet Union. The focus has invariably been on the macro scale and often from the perspective of a single discipline. This book differs from others by concentrating on the micro level of change and doing so from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, recognising that transformation processes are multiplex and require the linkages between the social, political, psychological, cultural and economic dimensions to be fully exposed and addressed.
