Un Livre Des Aquarelles

A photograph is a cursory glance, to which I return for a reminder. But the camera is mostly impersonal. I may direct it, but it interferes, interposes. I use these aquarelles like snapshots. When my hand touches the pencil, the brush, the paint, I become a part of the moment. Nobody else sees it as I did. I saw all these places. I studied them and painted them. They are my memory.

The way in which cultural values pass from generation to generation is the subject of this book. With the advent of mass communication and the devaluation of language, especially spoken English, younger cultures, like North America's may not possess the terminology to easily engage the concept at hand. The French philosophical school of Mediology, a radical movement founded by Regis Debray, posits that the cultural values are transmitted through four classic scenarios: by family; by spirituality, by politics; by masters. To this, we add a fifth scenario: by celebrity. Rather than explain in didactic or academic language, the ideas introduced here present themselves in a classical way, through the venerable technique of storytelling. Our challenge is to think for ourselves again."

The light was growing dim in the late afternoon of July 10, 1972, when the poet Kenneth Rexroth halted our conversation abruptly and reached for a file at the corner of his desk, sliding it across in my direction. “Look at this,” he said with some exasperation. It was a manuscript, 64 typewritten pages, which had originally come to him under a blind cover letter. “A fellow down in Los Angeles has sent this to me,” he said. “Perhaps you can make some sense of it. I think the guy might be crazy. But you may find something there.”It was bewildering enough that I slipped it into a box of papers under my desk that night and promptly forgot about it. Eventually the box traveled down to my parent's garage in Seal Beach, California. There it lay until 2013, when I stumbled upon it, forty-one years later. This is the complete text of that manuscript.
