"There has recently been much interest in the relationship between science and religion, and how they combine to give us a 'binocular' perspective on things. One important phenomenon which has been neglected in recent work is the concept of spiritual healing. This edited collection explores a variety of approaches to spiritual healing from different religious points of view, identifying both what it is and how it works. The authors also explore the biological and psychological processes, open to scientific enquiry, through which healing may be mediated. As such, this book indicates the central proposition that religious and scientific perspectives answer different questions about healing, and there is not necessarily any conflict between them"--

Medical researchers have known for decades that survivors of accidents, disaster, and childhood trauma often endure life-long symptoms ranging from anxiety and depression to unexplained physical pain and harmful acting out behaviors. Drawing on nature's lessons, Dr. Levine teaches you each of the essential principles of his four-phase process: you will learn how and where you are storing unresolved distress; how to become more aware of your body's physiological responses to danger; and specific methods to free yourself from trauma.
This study deals with the phenomenon of spiritual healing and witchcraft within the field of indigenous medicine and African Independent Churches in the contemporary urban setting of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Grounded in theoretical concepts of medical and symbolical anthropology, the book analyzes the syncretic character of medical culture and the so-called "therapy shopping" phenomenon. Special attention is paid to the local conceptualization of health, illness and body, cultural aetiology, the social and cultural representation of spirit possession and witchcraft, as well as a description of different types of healers along with their diagnostic and therapeutic praxis. A separate section is dedicated to the symbolical interpretation of witchcraft on the level of theory, system, and practice, based on different case studies. What happens? What does healing feel like? Do I have to believe it will work? Spiritual Healing is not Spiritualism, any more than it is Catholicism or any other ism. It involves the non-physical direction of healing energy within the patient through the laying-on of hands.
