Three Treatises on the Divine Images

  • Categories: Art

In AD 726, the Byzantine emperor ordered the destruction of all icons, or religious images, throughout the empire, and icons were subject to an imperial ban that was to last, with a brief remission, until AD 843. A defender of icons, St John of Damascus wrote three treatises against "those who attack the holy images." He differentiates between the veneration of icons, which is a matter of expressing honor, and idolatry, which is offering worship to something other than God.

Since the first centuries of the Christian era, Eastern Christianity has expanded through the various cultures of the Middle East and Eastern Europe, using a variety of languages in its worship and thus allowing native peoples to accept Christianity as their own. Most significant in this expansion was the "Baptism of Rus'" which occurred in 988 A.D., as St. Vladimir, prince of Kiev, made Byzantine Orthodox Christianity the official religion of his realm. From Russia, through Alaska, Orthodox Christianity came to North America as well. The missionary dimension of this entire development inspired the dedication of an Orthodox graduate school of theology to St. Vladimir in 1938. These twenty papers, written by a diverse group of internationally known theologians, historians, pastors and musicologists, were presented at an academic symposium held in September 1988 in recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of St. Vladimir's Seminary. They provide a fascinating picture of the historical, theological, social and spiritual developments which led Orthodox Christians from Byzantium to the modern world. Book jacket.

St. Gregory Palamas and Orthodox Spirituality

"This richly documented and lavishly illustrated study of Orthodox spirituality traces the development of "Orthodox mysticism" from the desert fathers through the patristic tradition to Byzantine hesychasm and its heritage in Russian monasticism. It shows how the work of Palamas transcends the limits of one school of spirituality and renews in its deepest essence the life of the Christian Mystery."--Jacket.

For the Life of the World

This book was originally written to serve as an outline for students in a discussion of the Christian "worldview." It suggests an approach to the world and to man's life in it that stems from the liturgical experience of the Orthodox Church. Alexander Schmemann understands issues such as secularism and Christian culture from the perspective of the unbroken experience of the Church, as revealed and communicated in her worship, in her liturgy -- the sacrament of the world, the sacrament of the Kingdom. - Publisher

The Ministry of Women in the Church

This book, written by a leading Orthodox theologian, offers a serious re-examination of the role of women in the Church. For Orthodox and Roman Catholics, especially, the question of women's ordination must be asked "from the inside" and not only "from the outside". This book does not suggest final answers, but raises issues and defines their relative importance.

The Cult of the Saints

"The cult of the saints is a phenomenon that expanded rapidly in the fourth century, and John Chrysostom's homilies are important witnesses to its growth. In this volume, Wendy Mayer investigates the liturgical, topographical, and pastoral aspects that marked the martyr cult at Antioch and Constantinople in John's time."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
