La presente publicación es una actualización de las Directrices para la lucha contra las intoxicaciones, publicada por la OMS en 1997 bajo la supervisión del Programa Internacional de Seguridad de las Sustancias Químicas. La intoxicación representa un gran problema de salud pública a nivel mundial. En muchos países, el envenenamiento es una de las causas principales de asistencia médica de emergencia en los hospitales. El envenenamiento es una emergencia en la que el tiempo resulta fundamental y, al igual que en las enfermedades infecciosas, puede ser necesaria la intervención de un especialista para que realice un diagnóstico correcto y establezca un tratamiento adecuado.
