Charles Villiers Stanford

'Jeremy Dibble has written a book which adds substantially to Stanford's reputation and which greatly enriches both British and Irish musical scholarship. It is brilliantly done.' -Irish TimesJeremy Dibble presents the first authoritative, comprehensive study of the life and works of Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), one of the most gifted and influential composers. Dibble reveals how, although perhaps best known for his church music, Stanford was also an eminent symphonist, songwriter, and author of many fine choral works. Cosmopolitan, ambitious, and pragmatic, he was untiring in his efforts to advance the cause of British music during its renaissance at the end of the nineteenth century, promoting the music of his contemporaries, and the many pupils he taught at Cambridge and the Royal College of Music, including Vaughan Williams, Ireland, Howells, Bliss, Holst, and Gurney.

James Simons, Medallion Hedge Fund and Renaissance Technologies, president testifies about the risks that hedge funds pose in the financial markets, before the House Oversight Committee, and HEARING BEFORE THE SENATE PERMANENT SUBCOMMITTEE ON INVESTIGATIONS by Jonathan Mayers, Counsel on Behalf of Renaissance Technologies LLC... The most successful hedge fund in history describe their business model as a positive expected value game. The model developed by Renaissance for Medallion and Medallion with barrier options makes predictions that are profitable only slightly more often than not. Moreover, the predicted price movements can be easily overwhelmed by external events. To compensate for these factors, the model generates a large number of recommendations, so that by virtue of the mathematical principle known as the law of large numbers, the variability of the returns produced by the model is greatly reduced.

The ONR Technical Report presents a sequence of computer programs that have been developed as part of a continuing program to apply computer simulation techniques to shallow-water marine sedimentation. Most of the programs are relatively short, and may be regarded as modules for representing specific processes. The modules are not generally useful by themselves for realistic simulation of geologic processes, but instead, are intended for ultimate use as components in larger simulation applications. In many respects, the programs may be regarded as pedagogical models that illustrate a particular mathematical tool applied in a sedimentation context. Hopefully, these program modules will be a step toward providing a generalized base on which other persons who wish to use simulation techniques can build. (Author).
