The world’s economy is fuelled by energy. Depletion of resources and severe environmental effects resulting from the continuous use of fossil fuels has motivated an increasing amount of interest in renewable energy resources and the search for sustainable energy policies. This volume contains research papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Energy and Sustainability. The changes required to progress from an economy mainly focussed on hydrocarbons to one taking advantage of sustainable renewable energy resources require considerable scientific research, as well as the development of new engineering systems. Energy policies and management are of primary importance to achieve ...

The future of energy production, operation and management in a changing world was the focus of the 5th International Conference on Energy Production and Management. Papers presented at the meeting form this volume. A focus is placed on the comparison of conventional energy sources, particularly hydrocarbons, with a number of other ways of producing energy, emphasising new technological developments, based on renewable resources such as solar, hydro, wind and geothermal. Key to sustainability is the need to convert new sustainable sources of energy into useful forms (electricity, heat, fuel), while finding efficient ways of storage and distribution. In many cases, the challenges lie as much w...

  • Publisher: Springer

The book provides a comprehensive overview of the most recent and advanced work on metallurgy sciences and technologies--including material characterization of complicated alloys, heat and surface treatment, ferrous metals metallurgy, and energy savings in pyrometallurgy--in the important Ural industrial region of Russia. Until recently, research into scientific and engineering problems within Russia developed along different lines than those in Europe and North America, but nevertheless resulted in remarkable achievements utilizing different tools and methodologies than those used in the West. Many of these achievements – particularly in metallurgy – were made in the Urals.

Advances in Information Technologies, Telecommunication, and Radioelectronics

The book is devoted to problems of information technologies (description and processing signals, especially ones corrupted by noises and disturbances) and to problems of telecommunications and production of advanced equipment in radio-electronics developed at the Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg, Russia. It describes the contemporary state of the art and the development of methods for solving problems of signal processing and building equipment for practical solutions. The volume is mainly a collection of ideas, techniques and results in the field of video information technologies and various related applications of numerical methods. It comprises 18 chapters grouped under four main topics: image processing and computer vision, signal processing and navigation, simulation of some practical processes and computations for antennas, and applications of microwaves. The research described in this volume is addressed to a wide audience of scientists, engineers and mathematicians involved in the above mentioned four scientific topics.

The finite element, an approximation method for solving differential equations of mathematical physics, is a highly effective technique in the analysis and design, or synthesis, of structural dynamic systems. Starting from the system differential equations and its boundary conditions, what is referred to as a weak form of the problem (elaborated in the text) is developed in a variational sense. This variational statement is used to define elemental properties that may be written as matrices and vectors as well as to identify primary and secondary boundaries and all possible boundary conditions. Specific equilibrium problems are also solved. This book clearly reveals the effectiveness and great significance of the finite element method available and the essential role it will play in the future as further development occurs.

Terrorist attacks and other destructive incidents caused by explosives have, in recent years, prompted considerable research and development into the protection of structures against blast loads. For this objective to be achieved, experiments have been performed and theoretical studies carried out to improve our assessments of the intensity as well as the space-time distribution of the resulting blast pressure on the one hand and the consequences of an explosion to the exposed environment on the other. This book aims to enhance awareness on and understanding of these topical issues through a collection of relevant, Transactions of the Wessex Institute of Technology articles written by experts...

Comprising a selection of articles dedicated to disaster management this volume focuses on the challenges arising from extreme natural phenomena and descriptions of methods for assessing their occurrence probability and of measures for mitigating their intensity and detrimental effects. The first group of articles describes general strategies for risk assessment and mitigation, providing examples in the context of various kinds of natural disasters. The economic impact of mitigation measures, communities’ differing coping capabilities, human attitudes towards relocation and possible links to climate change are among the topics considered. Natural strategies are outlined in the contexts of ...

Waste to Energy deals with the very topical subject of converting the calorific content of waste material into useful forms of energy. It complements and, to a certain degree, overlaps with its companion volume, “Biomass to Biofuels”, since a significant proportion of biomass converted to energy nowadays originates from various types of waste. The material in the first, more substantial part of the volume has been arranged according to the type of process for energy conversion. Biochemical processes are described in six articles. These relate to the production of methane by anaerobic digestion; reactor conversion efficiencies; investigations on ethanol production from biodegradable munic...
