The Kernel Function and Conformal Mapping

The Kernel Function and Conformal Mapping by Stefan Bergman is a revised edition of ""The Kernel Function"". The author has made extensive changes in the original volume. The present book will be of interest not only to mathematicians, but also to engineers, physicists, and computer scientists. The applications of orthogonal functions in solving boundary value problems and conformal mappings onto canonical domains are discussed; and publications are indicated where programs for carrying out numerical work using high-speed computers can be found. The unification of methods in the theory of functions of one and several complex variables is one of the purposes of introducing the kernel function and the domains with a distinguished boundary. This approach has been extensively developed during the last two decades. This second edition of Professor Bergman's book reviews this branch of the theory including recent developments not dealt with in the first edition. The presentation of the topics is simple and presupposes only knowledge of an elementary course in the theory of analytic functions of one variable.

On Two-dimensional Supersonic Flows

In previous reports by the author, the method of operators has been applied to investigation of two-dimensional flow patterns of an ideal compressible fluid, mostly in the subsonic case. Using a similar approach in the present paper, the author defines two different operators which generate supersonic two-dimensional flow patterns from differentiable functions of one real variable. (An operator is any rul by means of which one function is converted into another.) Since operators of the type considered preserve many properties of the functions to which they are applied and since the theory of functions of one real variable is more extensively developed than that of solutions of the compressibility equations, the results can be used as a basis for investigation of supersonic flow patterns.

The House at Ujazdowskie 16

The compelling history of ten Jewish families rebuilding their lives in Warsaw after the Holocaust—“amply illustrated . . . the book reverberates with hope” (Jewish Book Council). Warsaw, Poland, once described as the “Paris of the East,” had been transformed into a landscape of ruin by the ravages of World War II. Among the few areas of the city center that escaped Nazi decimation was Ujazdowskie Avenue, where German officials lived during the occupation. In the late 1940s, while most surviving Polish Jews were making their homes in new countries, ten Jewish families reclaimed a once elegant building at 16 Ujazdowskie Avenue and began reconstructing their lives. These families rebuilt on the rubble of the Polish capital and created new communities as they sought to distance themselves from the memory of a painful past. Based on interviews with family members, extensive archival research, and the families’ personal papers and correspondence, Karen Auerbach presents an engrossing story of loss and rebirth, political faith and disillusionment, and the persistence of Jewishness.
