Post-Soviet Conflicts

In the 30 years since the emergence of the post-Soviet conflicts things have both changed and remained the same – continuities and changes in post-Soviet conflicts are the primary themes of this volume – it addresses all major wars, civil wars, and rebellions in the former Soviet Union. The volume focuses on factors that have contributed or may contribute to the resolution of the post-Soviet conflicts, most of which have represented rather long and damaging crises. In all conflict cases Moscow has been guided by Russian state interests – some have been instigated or fueled, others driven to a frozen state, and still a couple of others have been constructively resolved due to Moscow’s...

Serving the United States as an Army Ranger, Stefan Brooks ended his last tour of duty working with the Afghanistan freedom fighters against the Soviet Union's forces that had invaded the country. Brooks worked with Mujaheddin freedom fighters throughout the war, he was recalled back to the States. Later after many years of hard fighting between the Mujaheddin and the Soviets the war ended with the Russians suing for peace. The Afghan's felt as if the United States had let them down, and this gave birth to the Al Qaeda terrorist group and the Taliban led by Osama Bin Laden. During Brooks service in Afghanistan, he made friends with a rebel leader, Ahmad Omar Karbala. And after the United States had pulled out, he too felt betrayed by his friend and the Americans and soon joined up with Bin Laden's Al Qaeda. Years later the two would meet once more, but this time things would be different. Karbala makes contact with his old friend by an attempt to kill Brooks, but it failed so now Brooks has to find and stop his ex-friend before he kills Americans.

The One-Eyed Snake

New York City Police Detective Lieutenant Megan Donahay is facing a most difficult investigation. After two men die from snake bites she's unable to determine the species of snake. Hearing of a similar death of a man in Florida she believes the three deaths may be connected. She's concerned. Is there one killer with one snake, or two or even three killers with other snakes? The venom chemistries are identical but unknown to medical professionals, herpetologists or the world of dealers in illegally imported exotic species. She finds that the three victims served in Vietnam in a military patrol. Her search for other members of the patrol is blocked by military authorities. However she discovers who they are and that three of the eight-man patrol have died before the recent murders. There are now two suspects—she must find the owner of the deadly snake before it's allowed to kill again.
