German description: Walter Koschorreck beschreibt sein Buch als einen Versuch, die Erscheinungen des fruhzeitlichen Strafrechts von der Voraussetzung des mythischen Denkens her zu deuten. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die mythische Figur des Wolfs als Damon des Totenreichs. Ihm wird der wolfisch-damonische Missetater gleichgestellt, der ebenfalls als unreines, damonisches Wesen gilt. Die Unreinheit ist gleichbedeutend mit seiner Schuld, auch bei Handeln ohne Vorsatz und Fahrlassigkeit. Motiv fur die Reaktion der Menschen gegen den Missetater ist nicht Rache, Vergeltung oder Strafe, sondern das Bestreben, ihn zur Abwehr magischer Gefahren aus der Gesellschaft zu entfernen. Koschorreck hat ein in sich geschlossenes, vollstandiges Deutungsmodell zum Wolf vorgelegt. Von hier aus erschliesst sich die Bedeutung nicht nur von Zentralbegriffen fruher Rechtsordnungen wie Steinigung, Wustung oder Friedlosigkeit, sondern auch von Grundfragen der Zurechnung oder der Legitimation von Todesstrafen.

Als die tierliche Arbeitskraft im Zuge der Motorisierung nach 1945 weitgehend obsolet geworden war, verloren Pferde unwillkürlich an Relevanz. Doch statt ihres mitunter befürchteten Verschwindens lassen sich für das Verhältnis zu Pferden Prozesse kultureller Sinnstiftung, Umwidmung, Neubesetzung und des Wiederauflebens beobachten. Nicht nur der Leistungsreitsport erlebte nach 1945 eine Blütezeit, auch das Pferd selbst erfuhr als Freizeitpartner, Fürsorgeobjekt und Freiheitssymbol neuerliche Signifikanz. Diese vielfältigen Ausprägungen von Mensch-Pferd-Beziehungen zeichneten sich zum einen durch Postulate der Erneuerung und Symbiose, zum anderen durch Traditionalität und die persistente Ausnutzung equiner Fähigkeiten aus. David de Kleijns Studie der heterogenen, stets emotional besetzten Diskurse um die Rolle des Pferdes im "Nachpferdezeitalter" (Koselleck) ermöglicht tiefe Einblicke in ein bislang wenig beachtetes Feld deutsch-deutscher Gesellschaftsgeschichte.

Tiere und Krieg
Menschliche Kriege können nicht ohne Tiere gedacht werden. Noch bis ins 21. Jahrhundert hinein haben sich Kriegsführung, Kampfeinsätze und Rettungsmissionen auf animalische Unterstützung verlassen, auf die Kraft, den Spürsinn und die schnelle Fortbewegung von Tieren.
