Thinking Mesolithic

Thinking Mesolithic

Kozlowski begins with thematic chapters exploring Mesolithic archaeology's key themes - the technologies people employed, the human ecology of Mesolithic communities and chronology. In a series of core chapters arranged according to European macro-regions, he then examines the diversity of Europe's Mesolithic cultures, remembering Kapuscinski's adage that 'for most people the world ends on the threshold of their own home, the outskirts of their own village, the borders of the valley they live in at the farthest.' He argues that the Mesolithic 'stage' resulted from the adaptation of Palaeolithic tundra communities to the new ecological conditions of the early Post Glacial, to a forested environment where the primitive agriculture that emerged in the Mediterranean region was not possible.

Territories, Boundaries and Cultures in the Neolithic Near East

This book presents a study of Neolithisation and the chronological sequence of Neolithic cultures in the Near East. Focusing on the years between 10,500 and 6200 BC, the authors start with empirical data in an attempt to reveal not only cultures, but the territorial limits of these cultures --their borders--and their possible interactions with time. The geographical zone covered comprises the two branches of the area known traditionally as the Fertile Crescent, as well as the steppe/desert zone which they encompass. A full Appendix presents a catalogue and find distribution sites. Preface by F. Hole.

Grahame Clark and His Legacy

Grahame Clark was a major figure in European archaeology for over 50 years, and pioneered work in prehistoric economies and ecology, in science-based archaeology and in a world view of ancient societies. In this book a variety of authorities from Europe and beyond assess these major contributions and provide discussions about Clark's own colleagues and contemporaries, his major archaeological themes and his varied approaches, and his world-wide contacts and travels. The papers provide surveys and opinions on Clark's role in the development of archaeology in the 20th century, and the basis that it provided for archaeological work of today. The book will be a valuable source of evidence, ideas and references for scholars interested in the development of the discipline.

The Creation of Inequality

Flannery and Marcus demonstrate that the rise of inequality was not simply the result of population increase, food surplus, or the accumulation of valuables but resulted from conscious manipulation of the unique social logic that lies at the core of every human group. Reversing the social logic can reverse inequality, they argue, without violence.
