Industriële films worden gezien als een apart filmgenre van de twintigste eeuw. Ze werden geproduceerd en gesponsord door de overheid en grote bedrijven en moesten vooral aan de wensen van de sponsors voldoen, en niet zo zeer aan die van de filmmakers. In de hoogtijdagen werkten er duizenden mensen aan deze industriële films. Zo zijn er vakbladen en filmfestivals ontstaan door samenwerking met grote bedrijven als Shell en AT & T. Daarnaast hebben belangrijke regisseurs, zoals Buster Keaton, John Grierson en Alain Resnais, aan deze films meegewerkt. Toch lijkt de industriële film geen spoor te hebben achtergelaten in het filmische culturele discours. New Energies
Over the past 250 years, energy transitions have occurred repeatedly—the rise of coal in the nineteenth century, the explosion of oil in the twentieth century, the nuclear utopianism of the 1950s and 1960s. These transitions have been as revolutionary as any political or economic upheaval, and they required changes in infrastructure and behavior. Yet new energies never wholly replace old ones. This volume historicizes energy production and consumption while demonstrating how energy use has reshaped everything from social life and economic organization to political governance. It foregrounds the importance of energy for big historical questions about capitalism, democracy, inequality, the environment, and identity, and it argues that energy systems themselves merit attention as key agents of historical change. Given the urgency of climate change, and the central position that energy plays in causing and potentially solving global warming, this volume engages history as a discipline in the debate over what may be most monumental energy transition of all time: the shift away from fossil fuels.

Deindustrialisation in Twentieth-Century Europe

Die Gemeinsame Sozialarbeit der Konfessionen (GSA) im Bergbau hat über Jahrzehnte Maßstäbe zur Humanisierung der Arbeitswelt gesetzt. Die GSA steht bis heute für ein besseres Betriebsklima im Arbeitsprozess und die erfolgreiche Einführung neuer Formen der Zusammenarbeit in den Betrieben, welche später nicht selten dort dauerhaft umgesetzt werden konnten. Sie leistete zudem durch ihre Tagungen für fremdsprachige Mitarbeiter einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Integration von Arbeitsmigranten und ihren Familien in Deutschland, nicht nur im Arbeitsalltag, sondern auch im Freizeitbereich. Ein Schwerpunkt der zeithistorischen Darstellung liegt daher auf dieser Tagungsform. Die Arbeit der GSA war nicht nur auf den Steinkohlenbergbau beschränkt, sondern wurde und wird auch in einer Vielzahl anderer Branchen, wie seinerzeit im Opel-Werk in Bochum oder aktuell in der Wasserwirtschaft, erfolgreich praktiziert.

Gras drüber ... Bergbau und Umwelt im deutsch-deutschen Vergleich
Der Begleitband zur historischen Sonderausstellung „Gras drüber ... Bergbau und Umwelt im deutsch-deutschen Vergleich“ des Deutschen Bergbau-Museums Bochum, Leibniz-Forschungsmuseum für Georessourcen, ist mehr als ein Ausstellungskatalog. Die Ausstellung selbst behandelt zentrale Fragen der deutsch-deutschen Umweltgeschichte mit Fokus auf den Bergbau von 1949 bis 1990 sowie den Umgang mit den Bergbaufolgefl ächen. Sie thematisiert drei unterschiedliche Bergbausparten und Regionen: den Braunkohlenbergbau in der Lausitz, den Steinkohlenbergbau im Ruhrgebiet und den Uranerzbergbau der SDAG Wismut in Thüringen und Sachsen. Der Begleitband versammelt wissenschaftliche Perspektiven auf das Thema, Ausstellungsinhalte und Fotografi en zentraler Objekte. Dabei werden auch gegenwärtige Entwicklungen refl ektiert und Ausblicke in die Zukunft der drei Bergbauregionen gegeben. Damit stellt der Band einen Beitrag zum Diskurs über die Darstellung deutsch-deutscher Zeitgeschichte dar und liefert grundsätzliche Einblicke in die Umwelt- und Bergbaugeschichte der BRD und der DDR.
