"This Special Paper includes a selection of material on the various contractional styles and modes of deformation in internal and external zones, and in deep and shallow parts of orogens. The collection of case studies discusses a broad range of processes and phenomena, including thrust tectonic styles (detachment-dominated vs. thick-skinned, or crustal ramp-dominated) in different subduction and collision orogens; modes and timing of thrust-fold and fabric development; the role of tectonic inversion processes and of strain localization vs. distributed deformation; and syn-convergence extensional deformation (and related tectonic exhumation) in orogens. Case studies are from the Zagros, the Apennines, the Appalachians, the Tasmanides of Eastern Australia, and the Moine Thrust Belt. A review of the main subduction- and collision-related orogens of the world is also provided, including the Alps, the Himalayas, the North American Cordillera, the Andes, the Caledonides of Scotland, the Appalachians, the Alice Springs orogeny in Australia, and the Aleutian and Makran accretionary wedges."--Publisher's website.
The Sognefjord transect through the Lower to Middle Paleozoic Caledonian orogenic belt in southern Norway provides a superb and exceptionally well-documented example of late collisional, Alpine-type tectonics. This field guide is the first synthesis of the region to include detailed locality descriptions.

The elucidation of the mechanisms and kinematics of shear zone deformation, at both local and regional scales, is the subject of a great deal of interest to scientists in the hydrocarbon industry, in seismology, and in structural geology more generally. This book comprises a collection of five theoretical and twelve regional contributions to the subject from a number of leading researchers in the field, with particular emphasis on work carried out in the Indian subcontinent. The book will be invaluable to advances students and researchers involved in the kinematics of shear.
The book deals with the study of three important volcanisms in the Campania Plain: Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Ignimbrites. The knowledge of the volcanic evolution of Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei has a particular relevance because of the hazards that these volcanoes pose to the about 1.5 million people living in the Neapolitan area. The contributors to the volume bring new data (experiments on volatile solubility, fluid-melt inclusions, tectonic, geophysical, isotope, geochronology), which are helpful in the creation of new models for a better understanding of the behaviour of the volcanic systems. In particular a hydrothermal model is used to explain the ground movements (bradyseism) at Campi...
Rivista di geologia sedimentaria e geologia marina.
This book provides an updated insight into the overall tectonic evolution of the Western Mediterranean region and North Africa. The tectonic setting of the region reflects a long-lived and complex evolution, mainly related to the Alpine Orogeny. This inheritance is expressed by an intricate pattern of arc-shaped mountain chains, the Alps, the Betic-Rif Cordilleras and the Apennine-Maghrebian belt, whose southern branches mark the present limit between the African and Eurasian plates. The volume covers the Maghrebian chains in North Africa, from Tunisia to Morocco and the Western and Central Mediterranean, from Spain to Italy from the pre-orogenic phases (Palaeozoic-Mesozoic) to the post-collisional neotectonic and Quaternary development. It includes both original research papers and syntheses dealing with the aspects of structural, sedimentary, metamorphic, marine geology.
