This open access book explores the collision between the sustainable energy transition and the Internet of Things (IoT). In that regard, this book’s arrival is timely. Not only is the Internet of Things for energy applications, herein called the energy Internet of Things (eIoT), rapidly developing but also the transition towards sustainable energy to abate global climate is very much at the forefront of public discourse. It is within the context of these two dynamic thrusts, digitization and global climate change, that the energy industry sees itself undergoing significant change in how it is operated and managed. This book recognizes that they impose five fundamental energy management cha...

Economic Model Predictive Control

Economic Model Predictive Control

Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) is a control strategy that moves process operation away from the steady-state paradigm toward a potentially time-varying operating strategy to improve process profitability. The EMPC literature is replete with evidence that this new paradigm may enhance process profits when a model of the chemical process provides a sufficiently accurate representation of the process dynamics. Systems using EMPC often neglect the dynamics associated with equipment and are often neglected when modeling a chemical process. Recent studies have shown they can significantly impact the effectiveness of an EMPC system. Concentrating on valve behavior in a chemical process, this monograph develops insights into the manner in which equipment behavior should impact the design process for EMPC and to provide a perspective on a number of open research topics in this direction. Written in tutorial style, this monograph provides the reader with a full literature review of the topic and demonstrates how these techniques can be adopted in a practical system.

Electrical Power System Essentials

The electrical power supply is about to change; future generation will increasingly take place in and near local neighborhoods with diminishing reliance on distant power plants. The existing grid is not adapted for this purpose as it is largely a remnant from the 20th century. Can the grid be transformed into an intelligent and flexible grid that is future proof? This revised edition of Electrical Power System Essentials contains not only an accessible, broad and up-to-date overview of alternating current (AC) power systems, but also end-of-chapter exercises in every chapter, aiding readers in their understanding of the material introduced. With an original approach the book covers the gener...

Axiomatic Design in Large Systems

  • Publisher: Springer

This book provides a synthesis of recent developments in Axiomatic Design theory and its application in large complex systems. Introductory chapters provide concise tutorial materials for graduate students and new practitioners, presenting the fundamentals of Axiomatic Design and relating its key concepts to those of model-based systems engineering. A mathematical exposition of design axioms is also provided. The main body of the book, which represents a concentrated treatment of several applications, is divided into three parts covering work on: complex products; buildings; and manufacturing systems. The book shows how design work in these areas can benefit from the scientific and systematic underpinning provided by Axiomatic Design, and in so doing effectively combines the state of the art in design research with practice. All contributions were written by an international group of leading proponents of Axiomatic Design. The book concludes with a call to action motivating further research into the engineering design of large complex systems.
