The Liber Amicorum is published on the occasion of the retirement of Professor Božidar Bakotić from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law, after an impressive career that started in 1961. His colleagues and former students have contributed to this collection of essays dealing with a variety of topics in the fields of international law which Professor Bakotić himself has been most active in. Therefore, the majority of essays deal with the subjects of international law, the various international régimes of spaces, the international protection of human rights and humanitarian law, the settlement of international disputes and the law of armed conflicts. The re-emergence of religion as a significant cultural, social and political, force is not gender neutral. Tensions between claims for women’s equality and the rights of sexual minorities on one side and the claims of religions on the other side are well-documented across all major religions and regions. It is also well recognized in feminist scholarship that gender identities and ethno-religious identities work together in complex ways that are often exploited by dominant groups. Hence, a more comprehensive understanding of the changing role and influence of religion in the public sphere more widely requires complex, multidisciplinary and comparative gender analyses. Higher education has recently been recognized as a key driver for societal growth in the Global South and capacity building of African universities is now widely included in donor policies. The question is; how do capacity building projects affect African universities, researchers and students? Universities and their scientific knowledges are often seen to have universal qualities; therefore, capacity building may appear straight forward. Higher Education and Capacity Building in Africa contests such universalistic notions. Inspired by ideas about the ‘geography of scientific knowledge’ it explores what role specific places and relationships have in knowledge production, and analyses how...

In the present world order, religion is seen as the cause of wars, conflicts, and clashes between peoples. A study team, sponsored by the Lutheran World Federation, consisting of Christians and Muslims from Denmark, Indonesia, and Nigeria, visited select sites in these three countries where religious strife has been pronounced. The study team¿s experiences, observations, interviews, and discussions with relevant persons in these countries are presented in this book. The analyses and comparison of specific conflicts and peace-building efforts between Christians and Muslims in Denmark, Indonesia, and Nigeria, as well as attempts to determine the role of religion in each of these situations reveals insights on how effective bridges can be built in contexts such as these.
