Collecting and Provenance
This collection of essays highlights the enduring significance of provenance and its implications for historians and art historians, as well as students and researchers engaged in museum studies. Confronting Kabbalah: Studies in the Christian Hebraist Library of Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter
Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter (1506–1557), humanist and privy councillor to popes and kings, has remained an enigmatic figure among Christian Hebraists whose views were little understood. This study leverages Widmanstetter's remarkable collection consisting of hundreds of Jewish manuscripts and printed books, most of which survive to this day. Explore in the first half the story of Jewish book production and collecting in sixteenth-century Europe through Widmanstetter's book acquisitions, librarianship, and correspondence. Delve into his unique perspective on Jewish literature and Kabbalah as the latter half of the study contextualizes the marginal notes in his library with his published works.
Descriptive Geometry, The Spread of a Polytechnic Art
This book seeks to explore the history of descriptive geometry in relation to its circulation in the 19th century, which had been favoured by the transfers of the model of the École Polytechnique to other countries. The book also covers the diffusion of its teaching from higher instruction to technical and secondary teaching. In relation to that, there is analysis of the role of the institution – similar but definitely not identical in the different countries – in the field under consideration. The book contains chapters focused on different countries, areas, and institutions, written by specialists of the history of the field. Insights on descriptive geometry are provided in the context of the mathematical aspect, the aspect of teaching in particular to non-mathematicians, and the institutions themselves.
A Catalogue of Books Printed in the Fifteenth Century Now in the Bodleian Library
The Bodleian's incunable catalogue describes the Library's fifteenth-century western printed books to the same standards expected in the best modern catalogues of medieval manuscripts. It records and identifies all texts contained in each volume, and the detailed analysis of the textual content is an innovative feature. Further information about authors, editors, translators, and dedicatees is given in an extensive index of names, complete with biographical and other information; this index will be of interest to textural scholars from the classical period to the renaissance. The detailed descriptions of the copy-specific features of each book (the binding, hand-decoration and hand-finishing, marginalia, and provenance) form another important contribution to scholarship. The provenance index will be of great value to all those interested in the history of the book from the 1450s to the present day.
Latin Manuscript Books before 1600
Die auf die 1819 vom Reichsfreiherrn Karl vom Stein gegründete „Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde“ zurückgehenden Monumenta Germaniae Historica haben die Aufgabe, durch kritische Quellen-Ausgaben und -Studien der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der mittelalterlichen Geschichte Deutschlands und Europas zu dienen. Dieses Ziel verfolgen sie dadurch, dass sie in ihren Editionsreihen mittelalterliche Textquellen der Forschung zugänglich machen und durch kritische Studien zur wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der deutschen und europäischen Geschichte beitragen. Die Aufgaben der Monumenta Germaniae Historica haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten durch die Einbeziehung neuer Quellengruppen und durch die Vermehrung der Forschungsbereiche stetig erweitert. Early Printed Books as Material Objects
The papers collected in this volume discuss descriptive methods and present conclusions relevant for the history of the book production and reception. Books printed in Europe in the 15th and 16th century still had much in common with manuscripts. They are not mere textual sources, but also material objects whose physical make-up and individual features need to be taken into account in library projects for cataloguing and digitization.
Abbatial Authority and the Writing of History in the Middle Ages
This book argues that abbatial authority was fundamental to monastic historical writing in the period c.500-1500. Writing history was a collaborative enterprise integral to the life and identity of medieval monastic communities, but it was not an activity for which time and resources were set aside routinely.
